FLASH - Mets Reach Agreement with Eric Young Jr.

Joel Sherman tweets that the Mets have avoided arbitration with Eric Young Jr. by agreeing to a $1.85 million contract for 2014. Young had been projected to receive $1.9 million by MLB Trade Rumors at the start of the off season. This brings to three the number of arb-eligible players that the Mets have reached agreement with. Previously the Mets signed Ike Davis for $3.5 million and Ruben Tejada for $1.1 million.

The Mets have a long history of avoiding arbitration with their arbitration eligible players. Arbitration hearings are often contentious and can result in hard feelings between the player and the club, because the club needs to highlight the player's shortcomings and failures in order to mke their case for their proposed salary. It is therefore considered very beneficial to reach an agreement prior to a scheduled hearing, thus avoiding arbitration. There are still four more remaining arb-eligible players on the Mets roster: Daniel Murphy, Dillon Gee, Bobby Parnell, and Lucas Duda.
