New Met – 2B/3B – Jairo Perez

It looks like Sandy Alderson may have picked another plum off of the longshot-prospect tree.

25-year old Jairo Perez signed a minor league deal with the Mets yesterday after coming off a .342/.407/.591/.998, 7-HR, 35-RBI, 149-AB, 20-K, 13-BB stat line in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Perez was an international free agent that was signed by the Minnesota Twins in 2009. He had a series of injuries while under contract with the Twins, but did manage to sandwich in a .337/.413/.580/.992 season in 2011 for the Twins’ A-ball affiliate.

Eventually, the Twins decided that he was too injury prone and was cut. From www.AaronGleeman.com on 7-18-12:

As part of their minor-league roster shuffling the Twins released Jairo Perez, who ranked 34th on my preseason list of the team's prospects. He hit .337/.413/.580 at low Single-A last year and .265/.350/.403 at high Single-A this year, which makes cutting Perez in July an odd move. On the other hand at age 24 he was very old for Single-A and didn't really have a clear defensive home. And now he's playing in an independent league.

Perez went Indy ball and, last year, hit .309/.359/.539/.898, 19-HR, 72-RBI for the Kansas City T-Bones of the American Association.

Opinion:  A-ball or Indy-ball… these are serious stat lines and it can’t hurt to invite this guy to camp.

Too bad he doesn't play shortstop.

And too bad at 24 he couldn't do better that .265 in High-A this year.

Looks like bench in '15 at best, but let's hope for better.

Its simply amazin that every time Sandy and his brainiacs pick up a player, its either a 1B or 2B. Is there no other positions the Mets need to find players for?
