June 4th 2015 -- Mets 6, Dbacks 2

Kevin Plawecki’s 2 run double in the 6th gave the Mets the lead, Matt Harvey, John Mayberry and Jeurys Familia took it from there, the Mets beat the Diamondbacks Wednesday night in Arizona 6-2. The Mets fell behind 1-0 in the 2nd when Jarred Saltalamacchia hit a solo homer (#2) off Harvey for an early lead.  Dback starter Robbie Ray pitched out of trouble for 5 shutout innings. In the 6th Dominic Leone came in and the Mets scored 3 runs to take the lead.  Wilmer Flores and Juan Lagares singled. Plawecki then hit a long 2 run double off the wall in center and it was 2-1. Ruben Tejada followed with a sac-fly scoring Plawecki from 3rd for a 3-1 lead.  In the bottom of the 6th Paul Goldschmidt hit a long opposite field homer, his #16 on the year to make it a 1 run game. But that's all the Dbacks would get.  In the 8th the Mets added one more. John Mayberry doubled (his 3rd hit of the game,) Lagares reached on an infield single. Pinch hitter Curtis Granderson singled home Mayberry for a 4-2 lead. In the 9th Flores reached on an error then Mayberry cashed in with his 4th hit, a 2 run homer (#2), and the Mets had a 4 run cushion. Harvey started slow on the night and got stronger as he went along. The only flaws on his pitching line were the two solo homers. He went 7 inning allowing 6 hits the 2 runs (earned) he walked 1 and struck out 9. He snaps a personal 2 game losing streak getting the victory, he’s now 6-3.  Leone takes the loss in relief and falls to 0-1.  Jeurys Familia came in with 1 out in the 8th and notched the 5 out save. His 16th save on the year.  The Met offense produced 14 hits on the night. Every starter in the lineup had at least 1 hit. John Mayberry led the way going 4 for 5 with the homer, 2 doubles and a single. For Mayberry, it was his first 4 hit game in the bigs.  Lagares went 2 for 4. With the win the Mets get win number 30 on the year, they stand at 30-25 overall and 9-17 on the road. The Nationals lost on Thursday night, so the Mets are 1/2 game ahead in first place in the NL East. Friday night its game 2 of the 4 game set. Jonathon Niese (3-5  4.42) looks to get back on track in the desert, Jeremy Hellickson (3-3 5.08) goes for Arizona.

Mayberry has to be able to take a big sigh of relief. Raising your average 60 points in one night is a sweet thing. May he now go on a tear - we need one.

I'm hopeful that they'll Mayberry enough ab's to maintain his readiness to be a bench bat... and enough exposure to figure out that he can or can't do what they need.
