Threshers shut out Mets 3-0

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 23, 2018) – The Clearwater Threshers shut out the St. Lucie Mets 3-0 on Monday at First Data Field.

Mets pitcher Anthony Kay was excellent again in a tough luck defeat. The lefty first rounder from 2016 did not allow an earned run over six innings. He scattered four hits, walked three and struck out three.

Kay has pitched a quality start in all four of his outings for St. Lucie. He lowered his ERA to 1.42.

Threshers starter Alejandro Requena blanked the Mets over six innings. He gave up just two singles and two walks.

Jonathan Hennigan pitched two scoreless innings and Addison Russ tossed a perfect ninth for his third save.

The Threshers scored their only run off of Kay in the third inning. Grenny Cumana reached on an error and would go on to score on a Mickey Moniak sac fly.

Clearwater added two insurance runs in the eighth. Edgar Cabral laced a RBI triple and Kyle Martin followed with a RBI double to make it 3-0.

For the Mets, Luis Carpio went 1 for 2 with a single and a walk. He extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Cabral went 2 for 3 with a walk, RBI and run.

Kay impresses.

St Lucie hitting depresses.

Not to be crass, but St Lucie really sucks this year, at least with the bat(s).

Ex-Beet Mack...

Remember these words, beet root.

Mack, I am liking this "Joey Bats" guy more and more every game. Thirty-seven years old? Are you kidding me? Less than 2% body fat, it's like Steve Somers for goodness sakes. Either way, Joey Bats can hit and I am hoping that these NY Mets re-sign him for 2019. Bautista plays third, left and right field and well. Hits for power too! Joey Bats was a very favorable signing here.

I like the Nathan Eovaldi Red Sox recent signing. Pomergranite just wasn't cutting the cheese lately, may still be affected by an injury it looks like. Lefty starter Jalen Beeks was given up in that trade going from Boston. I wanted him here on the Mets Omar! The Yankees getting Zach Britton was a good move for them (from Baltimore) as well.

I think Matt denDekker got sent down to AAA Vegas to find a better bat. Jeff McNeil showed well in his first game up yesterday. And Michael Conforto IS ALIVE! He has his 2017 smooth mechanics back and working. He has that confident gleam in his eyes again too! Great to see happening!

On my boy Nimmo...

As I have said here before, every batter defines his own "out pitch". Brandon's is low and inside. But he's a rookie and in short time he will make the necessary adjustments to conquer this.

Now I know Brandon is only a rookie, but as a fan of his I am hoping that (in time and when he is able to) he can begin to slow his bat down a little and hit to the opposite field more the way Conforto did the other day. Brandon can do this and I am sure that he will.

Some of the Mets batters should be thinking hitting the first pitch more than what I am seeing. You get behind by taking a beautiful strike to hit on the first offering, swing at the next one and foul it off, and then right there you are 0-2 in the count and sucking for air so to speak. The advantage is not your's anymore, it is the pitchers and he will put his third and fourth pitches an inch or two off the plate, making getting a hit so much more difficult.

So yeah, start coming into the box thinking first pitch maybe more often.

Why are the Mets winning now?

Confidence, chemistry, new faces like Corey Oswalt and Jeff McNeil. These two are keepers.

Why do I still like Boston best in the AL East?

Besides their talent level, they are have an amazing amount of fun out there, it shows, and it keeps them all into the game and loose.
