Llanes shuts down Cardinals, Mets win 6-1


JUPITER, Fla. (July 20, 2018) – The St. Lucie Mets snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Palm Beach Cardinals 6-1 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Friday.

Gabriel Llanes made one of the best starts of the year. The right-hander shut out the Cardinals over seven innings. He scattered six singles, did not walk a batter and struck out seven. He threw 99 pitches and got his fourth win.

Blake Tiberi, playing in his second game with St. Lucie after being promoted from Columbia, went 2 for 4 with a triple, double, two RBI and two runs scored. His RBI triple in the fourth put the Mets on the board. He was then driven in by a Wuilmer Becerra double that put the Mets ahead 2-0.

The Mets broke the game open with four runs in the eighth. Mike Paez led off the frame with a triple. Jeremy Vasquez followed with a RBI single. Tiberi belted a run-scoring double and Raphael Gladu capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 6-0.

Matt Pobereyko tossed a scoreless bottom of the eighth. Austin McGeorge closed out the ninth. The Cardinals scored their lone unearned run with two outs in the ninth.

The Mets pounded out 15 hits, including seven for extra bases. Andres Gimenez and Ali Sachez both went 3 for 5. Gimenez hit his 20th double.

Vasquez and Paez joined Tiberi with two hits apiece. Luis Carpio extended his hitting streak to eight games with a double in the seventh.
