METS ACQUIRE ALL-STAR RHP MARCUS STROMAN FROM TORONTO

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 28, 2019 – The New York Mets tonight announced that the club has acquired All-Star RHP Marcus Stroman and cash considerations from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league LHP Anthony Kay and minor league RHP Simeon Woods-Richardson.

Stroman, 28, entered today ranked fifth in the American League in ERA (2.96), with the third-lowest slugging percentage (.357) and eighth-lowest OPS (.656). He was named to the American League All-Star team earlier this month.

“Marcus is a dynamic talent who will bring tremendous passion to our team and energy our fans will truly appreciate,” Executive Vice-President and General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen said. “As a Long Island native, we believe that Marcus will thrive playing in New York.”

He owns the sixth-lowest HR/9 rate (0.72) in the majors and has yielded 10 home runs in 124.2 innings this year. Since his rookie season in 2014, Stroman ranks 10th in the majors in homers per nine innings (0.80).

The Medford, NY native has the fifth-best ERA (2.93) vs. National League clubs among all American League pitchers with 75.0 or more innings vs. the NL since 2014.

Among pitchers with at least 700.0 innings pitched since 2014, Stroman has allowed the third-fewest extra-base hits (221), behind Alex Wood (186) and Carlos Martinez (207).

Stroman is 47-45 with a 3.76 ERA in 135 major league games, 129 starts (all with Toronto).

Kay, 24, is 8-6 with a 3.13 ERA in 19 combined starts between Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League and Syracuse (AAA) of the International League this year.

Woods-Richardson, 18, is 3-8 with 4.25 ERA in 20 starts for Columbia (A) of South Atlantic League.

As I have often said, the Mets don't have a sense of direction. They never give any plan enough time to work.

They trade for Stroman but they want to trade Wheeler and Diaz and possibly Syndergaard.

They want to build the farm system but keep trading the best prospects. Then they want to trade Wheeler, Diaz and Syndergaard for prospects?

But that would leave them without a closer, and two ace type pitchers?

Why couldn't these idiots just extend Wheeler and fix the pen?

Mets, owned by idiots, run by imbeciles.

What this trade told me:

1) VanWagenen and his analytic dept. didn't feel that Kay and Simeon Woods-Richardson should be as highly regarded as the Alderson's crew and many Met fans believed/hoped they should be.

2) What better way to attempt a drastic high-end prospect grab then to corner starting pitcher market just before the 1st year a single trade deadline date is implemented (remember no Aug 1st trade date this year).

Strengthening the Mets hand is that there are so many playoff contending teams that need starting pitching.

Imagine how the Mets major league team and upper minors could improve if Syndergaard, Wheeler, Vargas, Diaz, Lugo, and even Stroman were leveraged for increased return value between the Padres, Braves, Yankees, Twins, Dodgers, A's and any other suiters......

However with just over 1 day to negotiate trades left, the front office would need to start completing more of these trades immediately.

Viper. You nailed it. "As I have often said, the Mets don't have a sense of direction. They never give any plan enough time to work."

Bob,

You may be right but as you said, the Mets have only one day to make all these trades. Having said that, why would you break up a team you thought could win it all in less than one year?

It just doesn't make sense. What has killed the Mets this year is the BP. 21 blown saves or so. Now imagine if the Mets had blow only 10 of those 21. Would the Mets be on at least the WC? yes they would.

But after building the so called "come and get us team" the Mets now want to reverse course and trade the starters for prospects? while trading their last 2 best pitching prospects for a starter?

They don't know what the hell they are doing. It makes absolutely no sense.
Unless they pull a rabbit out of you know...the Agent of Doom rear, I just can't see it.

Apologies Mack, just frustrated.

Still, I give this deal and "incomplete" rating right now. I want to see what else comes down before the trading deadline ends.

As for right now, we game up a AAA struggling starter and an A+ Starter with an injury history... for an ace with a year left.

As of today, we have one of the best rotations in baseball.

I was never a fan of Stroman in school because of his height... but I was wrong. He not only is producing an all-star year, he was the top pitcher out their available during this trading period.

Let's see what happens.

What if the Mets extend Wheeler, and trade Vargas for two prospects?

Vargas deal is a salary dump. In return, the Phillies are sending Double-A catcher Austin Bossart to the Mets, according to multiple reports. Bossart, 26, is slashing .195/.303/.335 with seven homers and 28 RBI in 63 games with the Reading Fightin Phils.

Mackade, what about lefty reliever Robbie ray from Arizona. Nice SO stats and the Mets could use lefty SO pitchers in their bullpen. Justin Wilson upgrade.

Do you guys think that this is the best NY Mets starting rotation ever? I am leaning that way, but time always tells.

On predicting talent and player development, i.e. Andres Gimenez. Everyone had him as the cannot miss/next big thing middle infielder. Right now, at a very early age, he is hitting like .244BA at AA Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

Andres is very young and time is on his side. (Rolling Stones)

Mets should make up a package to get Robbie Ray. Nothing that they cannot afford to lose because they have good depth there.

But a SO lefty later inning reliever would go a long way here with these NY Mets.

Anon -

I've heard no Mets interest in Ray.

Regarding the current rotation... not sure if they are the best ever, but they have the potential of producing a sub 3.00 ERA together.

You do that all season and, trust me, this is 90+ win team.
