Well, in 2018 and 2019, he was a combined 18-19, 4.13 ERA, 303 Ks in 294 innings, and a 1.25 WHIP with the Padres.
Sounds like SP4/SP5 to me. More like SP4 than SP5, frankly.
Then he missed most of 2020.
Mets grabbed him in 2021, and he went 1-4, 4.46 in 38 innings before needing Tommy John surgery.
A shame, because after a shaky 2021 season start, in his last 5 outings in 2021 pre-injury, he threw 23 innings and allowed a mere 3 runs, allowing just 15 hits, and fanning 24. SP2 caliber production. We’d take that from Max and Justin, am I right?
Lucchesi missed 2022 except for a few minor league rehab appearances.
In 2023, in AAA, 21 innings, 1.66 ERA, 23 Ks.
With the Mets, 1-0, 4.43 in 22 innings.
So, who is Joey Lucchesi?
An SP4, perhaps SP5, I’d say.

As such, I’d take a REALLY hard look at Carrasco if I was Billy.
Is Cookie’s ERA of nearly 9, and his fragility and age of 36, a sign of sudden decline? Or even mediocrity, scraping-by pitching?
Then you have an SP5 in the waiting, behind Max, Justin, Kodai, and Tylor.
A darned good one.

Joey is clearly better.
I know Buck likes his veterans - but Joey is one, also.

Carrasco 15 games last year. Has Lucchesi won 15 games his entire career? Major and minors combined? Give Carrascomsome time and see f he healthy.

Considering we need like an 8 man rotation at least I think we can fit both in. You would think with all the money in baseball someone somewhere has to be trying to figure out the craziness of pitching injuries because long gone are the days of starters going 9 innings as we now have trouble getting to 6 so what the hell happened? Also with high cost of pitchers absenses someone has to be working on it right? Anyone heard anything on the subject? I also hope the nonsence of holding back prospects who are tearing it up in AAA will stop (although I know movement on anything in Baseball is at a Glaciers pace) because I hate the excuses of why they don't bring them up and unlike the Wilpon error it can't be about starting their clock early with SC.

Gary...the median team ERA for starters is 4.40, so Joey easily is in SP5 territory. I would assume the average SP5 ERA is well above 5.00.
With SO many starters getting seriously hurt, a differential diagnosis is definitely in order. Could a Jim McAndrew or a Don Cardwell have pitched well in 2023, or not? They were durable, especially the latter guy. Can starters today win with the same stuff and velocity as in 1969?
The Mets average a woeful 4.8 innings per start this year, with a 5.37 ERA in starts. In 1969? Starters for the Mets averaged 6.8 innings. So, roughly 4 innings of relief needed per game now vs. 2 innings per game in 1969. What a difference.
