Brooklyn Cyclones Game Notes — Sunday, May 21 [DH] — at Hudson Valley [12:05 PM

 

The Brooklyn Cyclones (14-20) attempt to extend their season-high-tying three-game winning streak in a doubleheader against the Hudson Valley Renegades (22-15) — the High-A affiliate of the New York Yankees — on Sunday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. from Heritage Financial Park.

RHP Tyler Stuart (0-0, 1.40) is scheduled to take the hill for Brooklyn against Hudson Valley’s RHP Chase Hampton (1-0, 3.04) in game one.

RHP Christian Scott (0-0, 7.94) is projected to get the ball for the Cyclones in game two against Renegades’ RHP Drew Thorpe (2-1, 4.26).

LAST TIME OUT: The Cyclones matched their longest winning streak of the season, taking their 3rd straight over the Renegades, 6-1, on Friday night...Hudson Valley went ahead in the 5th on a solo home run by RF Grant Richardson...Brooklyn tied it on a CF Alex Ramírez double and took the lead on a LF Jaylen Palmer sacrifice fly in the 6th...3B Chase Estep reached base 4 times on a pair of hits and walks, adding an RBI in the 9th...1B Joe Suozzi reached 4 times as well thanks to 3 singles and a hit-by-pitch...All 9 batters for Brooklyn reached base at least once...Richardson and 1B Rafael Flores registered multi-hit games for the ‘Gades...RHP Joander Suárez earned his first win, while RHP Dylan Tebrake and LHP Quinn Brodey collected a hold and save, respectively.  

 

PITCHING IN: The Cyclones' pitching staff has been marvelous over the course of the team’s 3-game winning streak...Since Wednesday afternoon, Brooklyn has permitted just 1 earned run (4 total) on 17 hits through the last 27.0 innings...That is good for a microscopic 0.33 ERA...Cyclones' pitching has walked 18 and struck out 35 in that span...Brooklyn’s strikeout rate is 31.3% during the win streak...The ‘Clones have outscored the ‘Gades, 19-4, over the last 3 games...Additionally, after not accruing a win in the first 31 games, Brooklyn starters have earned the victory in each game of the win streak. 

 

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Brooklyn plays their 2nd doubleheader of the 2023 season on Sunday afternoon...The twinbill makes up for Saturday’s washout due to unplayable field conditions...The Cyclones were swept in their initial twinbill at Wilmington last Wednesday...Brooklyn dropped the opener, 7-4, and the nightcap, 7-1...In 2022, the Cyclones played in 10 twinbills, registering a split record of 10-10...Sunday marks Brooklyn’s first double-dip against Hudson Valley since the Cyclones swept the Renegades on Coney Island on May 22, 2022...Brooklyn won the lid-lifter, 5-4, and the finale, 3-1. 

 

BROOKLYN BRUISING COMPANY: In Friday’s victory, the Cyclones were drilled with pitches on 6 different occasions...That is the most times a single team has been plunked in a South Atlantic League game this season...It also set a new franchise record for hit-by-pitches in a single game...The previous high-water mark was 5 on July 24, 2022, at Jersey Shore...In addition, with LF Jaylen Palmer and 1B Joe Suozzi drilled twice and once, respectively, they have tied OF Matt Rudick’s Cyclones record for career hit-by-pitches with 16...Rudick still holds the single-season mark as all 16 of his came in the 2022 season. 

 

WIZARD OF SUOZZ: OF/1B Joe Suozzi matched a season-high with 3 hits on Friday and enters Sunday riding an 8-game on-base streak during the course of Brooklyn’s road trip...The Glen Cove, N.Y. native is 10-for-his-last-26 (.385) with 4 runs scored, 2 doubles, 4 RBI, 3 walks, and a stolen base...Suozzi has registered a .913 OPS and 152 wRC+ in those 7 contests...Dating back to April 26 at Jersey Shore, the 25-year-old has registered at least one base knock in 11-of-14 games.  

 

E-STEP UP: After a bumpy month of April, INF Chase Estep has picked up the pace at the plate in the season’s second month...In his last 10 games played dating back to May 5, the 23-year-old is slashing .324/.395/.559 with a .954 OPS...Estep has accumulated 6 runs scored, 3 doubles, a triple, a home run, and 8 RBI in 38 plate appearances...The Corbin, Ky. native has also registered a 153 wRC+...In his first 12 games, the Estep was just 2-for-43 (.047) at the dish with a wRC+ of -21. 

 

STU-PER DUPER: RHP Tyler Stuart has been as consistent as any starting pitcher in the SAL in 2023...The 23-year-old extended his scoreless inning streak to 8.0 innings with 5.0 scoreless frames at Wilmington last Saturday...If he had enough innings to qualify entering Sunday, Stuart would lead the league in ERA (1.40)...He is also would also be tied for 3rde in batting average against (.202). 

 

BREAK OUT THE RYE BREAD: 3B Mateo Gil’s grand slam in the top of the 6th inning on Thursday marked the first 4-RBI home run by a Cyclone in 2023...It marked Brooklyn’s first grand slam since 1B JT Schwartz smashed one off RHP Ryan Miller at Hudson Valley on July 27, 2022...Last season, the Cyclones smashed a pair of grand salamis...CF Jaylen Palmer hammered the first off RHP Alex Pham vs. Aberdeen on June 12. 

 

RAMÍ ROCKETS: OF Alex Ramírez reached base 4 times and tied a season-high with 3 hits on Thursday night at Hudson Valley...The 20-year-old doubled twice, worked a walk, scored a run, and drove in another...It was Ramírez’s first multi-extra base hit game since he doubled twice on August 25, 2022, at Jersey Shore...Since joining Brooklyn’s roster on July 4 of last year, Ramírez leads the South Atlantic League in RBI (53), hits (96), and doubles (24)...He only trails teammate OF Stanley Consuegra in extra-base hits (32) and is tied with him for the most total bases (143). 

 

HIT PARADA: C Kevin Parada cracked a home run on Tuesday night and has been on a tear since the calendar flipped to May...In 15 games during the season’s second month, the 21-year-old is slashing .281/.369/.526 with a .896 OPS...Parada is 16-for-57 at the dish (.281) with 10 runs scored, 6 doubles, a triple, 2 home runs, and 8 RBI...In that time frame, the Los Angeles native holds a .401 wOBA and a 139 wRC+...In the month of May, Parada is tied for tied for 2nd in the league in doubles (6) and tied for 6th in extra-base hits (9)...For the entire campaign, the Georgia Tech alum is tied for 3rd in the SAL in two-base hits (10). 

 

NONE SHALL PASS: LHP Daniel Juárez has been as dominant as can be out of the bullpen for the Cyclones in 2023...In his first 11 outings of the campaign, the southpaw holds a 2-0 record with 1 save...He has not permitted a run on 5 hits and 6 walks, striking out 21 (13.83 K/9)...In 16 regular season appearances with the ‘Clones dating back to last season, Juárez has yielded only 1 unearned run in 18.0 innings...The 22-year-old has not surrendered an earned run in 24 straight appearances dating back to last year...Juárez last allowed earned runs on June 22, 2022, with Single-A St. Lucie at Palm Beach...Since then, he is 4-0 with 10 hits allowed, 15 walks, and 36 strikeouts in 28.1 innings...Since the streak began, no pitcher in Minor League Baseball has thrown more innings without allowing an earned run.
