The Mets Future - 2B

The Mets Future: 2B

For whatever reason, second base never has been a priority to the Mets since Omar & Co. took over. The multi-year contract given to Luis Castillo was designed to take this story out of print; however, Castillo’s play, or lack of it, keeps bringing back to the headlines.

The Castillo will continue. I truly believe the Mets would eat a good portion of this contract if someone came along and took the position away.

Alex Cora is a great backup, but he’s not the answer.

The top minor leaguer is Greg Veloz, who will be ready in 2011, but it’s still questionable if he has the consistent talent to make it in the bigs.

Youngster Jordany Valdespin seems to have the highest ceiling, but he can’t keep out of the Sand Gnats dog house.

There really is nothing to write home about currently playing in AAA or AA.

Future Status: 2013: Wilmer Flores

I’m assuming the Mets will resign Jose Reyes to a new, longer contract. My second assumption is that Savannah 16-year old prospect Flores is the real deal, something I’m totally convinced of. You can’t believe the poise this kid has, in a strange country at an age you and I were only heavy petting. He will eventually move to second base and come to Queens in 2013.
