Brad Holt allowed five runs in 5.1 innings and recorded an RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the sixth leading to a five-run frame, which proved to be the difference in Binghamton’s 7-5 win over Reading at First Energy Stadium Friday night. Josh Thole slapped two hits for the second straight night and drove in a run in five turns at bat.
Binghamton (45-71) got on the board first against R-Phils starter Kyle Drabek in the fourth inning. After Caleb Stewart and D.J. Wabick singled to open the frame, Shawn Bowman laced a double to left-center to drive in both men and put the B-Mets on top 2-0. It was Bowman’s first game back after missing 26 games due to injury.
Reading catcher Kevin Nelson provided the answer in the last of the fifth. Neil Sellers and Steve Susdorf opened the inning with singles off Holt. With the corner infielders expecting bunt, Nelson connected on a first-pitch fastball from Holt and sent it soaring over the left-field wall to give the Phillies their only lead, 3-2.
The B-Mets wasted no time in getting the lead back starting the sixth. Bowman, Emmanuel Garcia and Jose Coronado loaded the bases to start the frame thanks to a hit by pitch and two singles allowed by Pat Overholt. Holt walked with the bases full bringing in the tying run. Ruben Tejada was the next to reach, driving in Garcia and Coronado with a two-run single.
Already up 5-3, the onslaught continued when Thole singled home Holt with a liner into center. Then Tejada and Thole successfully executed a double steal, on which Tejada scored on following a bad throw from Nelson that went into left field.
Reading (63-54) countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to RBI singles from Sellers and Nelson to get within two, but that was as close as the Phillies would come to the B-Mets.
Jake Ruckle, Derek Ellison and Connor Robertson tossed the final 3.2 innings scoreless and allowed just one hit combined. Robertson hurled the ninth in hitless fashion with two strikeouts for his 10th save in as many chances.
Overholt was hung with the loss for allowing five runs, four earned, in just one third of an inning. Drabek went a season-low 4.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits as the starter.
