Dylan Owen worked his second longest outing of the season, but was unable to keep the Binghamton Mets from being swept by the Harrisburg Senators, who won 5-2 Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. Ruben Tejada, Josh Thole and Jose Coronado all collected two hits apiece but the B-Mets stranded nine runners on base.
A leadoff walk issued to Marvin Lowrance came back to hurt Owen in the second inning, as he would later score on Freddie Bynum’s batted ball. The hit glanced off the foot of Owen allowing only one run to score since the ball remained on the infield, pitting the Senators a 1-0 lead.
Lowrance extended the Harrisburg lead to 2-0 with a solo home run off Owen in the fourth inning. The fifth inning saw the Senators tack on two more runs. Bynum reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on Jonathan Malo’s errant throw. Michael Daniel was then hit by an Owen pitch and was followed by a Leonard Davis bases-clearing double, stretching the lead to 4-0.
Binghamton (44-71) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth after Coronado singled and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Owen. Tejada then singled off Senators starter Jeff Mandel, driving in Coronado. After a Thole single, Ike Davis drove in Tejada from second with the B-Mets third straight single, cutting the lead to 4-2.
Harrisburg (55-61) tallied an insurance run in the eighth when Owen came out to start the frame. He allowed a single to Davis before retiring Matt Whitney and was pulled in favor of reliever Roy Merritt. Merritt then gave up a single to Bill Rhinehart that scored Davis, extending the lead to 5-2.
Owen worked 7.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits. He also struck out six men but lost his eighth game with the B-Mets.
Mandel kept his record perfect, moving to 3-0 on the season. He worked six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. Drew Storen saved his second game in three days to nail down the victory.
