B-Mets Relentless Offense Secures Win, 11-7
PORTLAND,ME – The Binghamton Mets collected 12 hits and scored at least one run in allbut one inning in an 11-7 win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon atHadlock Field. The rubber match victory secured Binghamton’s third straightseries win and kicked their average above .500 for the first time in May.
Binghamtongrabbed the lead three batters into the game against Sea Dogs starter ChrisBalcom-Miller. Matt den Dekker wasted little time to extend his hitting streakto a career-best 15 games with an infield single to third. After advancing tosecond on a throwing error by third baseman Kolbrin Vitek, the first of fourfor Portland, he moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on Reese Havens’ground out to second.
TheB-Mets added two runs in the second when Juan Lagares scored on a wild pitchand Pedro Zapata supplied a sac fly. Raul Reyes lashed an RBI double withtwo-outs in the third and den Dekker drove in a run with a single in thefourth, Balcom-Miller’s final inning. The righty was tagged for five runs(three earned) on four hits and walked five in four innings of work.
Binghamtonkept the offense rolling against reliever Jeremy Kehrt. Lagares ripped an RBIdouble in the fifth and Sean Kazmar drove in two with a double in the sixth.Kazmar scored later in the three-run inning on a fielding error by ReynaldoRodriguez at first. The frame gave Binghamton a 9-2 lead.
Portlandtrailed from the start, but refused to go down without a fight. JeremyHazelbaker got the Sea Dogs on the board in third with a solo homer againststarter Greg Peavey in the third and Derrik Gibson added a sac fly in thefourth.
Downby seven in the sixth, Portland chased Peavey from the game by getting thefirst four to reach safely. Ronald Bermudez’s RBI single with the bases loadedended Peavey’s day. The righty allowed three runs on eight hits over fiveinnings.
Withthe bases loaded and no outs, Kevin Mulvey entered and induced Derrik Gibson tobounce back to the mound, starting a double-play. Heiker Meneses struck out toend the threat.
Theseventh was not as smooth for Mulvey as he walked one and hit a batter beforeserving up a three-run homer to Rodriguez, cutting Binghamton’s lead to three.
JeffKaplan took over, but added fuel to the flames, allowing the first four hefaced to reach safely. Gibson ripped an RBI single to center with the basesloaded to make it 9-7.
Itwas as close as the Sea Dogs would get. Kaplan retired the next two batters toend the inning and posted a perfect eighth to cap his day. The B-Mets added insuranceruns in the eighth and ninth, highlighted by a Jefry Marte solo homer.
AdrianRosario, pitching in his second straight game, navigated around two walks topost a scoreless ninth inning. Peavey (3-1) snapped a five-start winless streakwith the victory, while Balcom-Miller (2-4) suffered his third loss to theB-Mets.
