Daytona 4, St. Lucie 3

Daytona Beach, FL The Daytona Cubs won an intensely dramatic 4-3 game in walk-off fashion over the first-place St. Lucie Mets on Monday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

With both benches warned and already one ejection in the game, Daytona entered the ninth inning trailing 3-1. C Chad Noble, who scored the Cubs first run of the ballgame in the seventh, singled to the right side for the second consecutive plate appearance. After LF John Andreoli walked, CF Matt Szczur singled to right-center which advanced Noble to third. Andreoli overran second base which drew a throw from 1B Richard Lucas who cut the throw from RF Cory Vaughn. Lucas' throw went into left field which allowed Noble to score on the first baseman's sixth error of the season. After RHP Taylor Whitenton was brought into the game by the Mets, still with nobody out, SS Arismendy Alcantara blooped a singled over 3B Wilmer Flores to tie the game at 3-3 after failing on two bunt attempts. Next, DH Nelson Perez was hit near his head on the upper shoulder on an 0-2 pitch which brought the benches and bullpens a couple of steps onto the field. Lucas was hit in the back earlier in the game, the first pitch after Flores broke a scoreless tie in the seventh with a homerun. The hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, and after fouling off five pitches with two strikes, 3B Greg Rohan hit a sacrifice fly to center field to win the game for the Cubs.

RHP Matt Loosen allowed just the solo homerun to Flores on two hits in his 6.2 innings of work. He walked one struck out a season-high eight opponents. Loosen allowed only one hit over 5.2 innings in his last start against the Brevard County Manatees.

After Lucas was hit in the back in the seventh inning, both benches were warned and Mets Hitting Coach Benny Distefano was ejected for arguing with the umpires. Both teams exchanged words, with Lucas being restrained by teammates.

In a 1-1 game in the eighth, RHP Ty'Relle Harris retired the first two Mets, but after a CF Alonzo Harris Jr. double and a Vaughn walk, Harris threw a wild pitch which allowed both runners to advance a base. With Flores batting, another Harris wild pitch allowed Harris Jr. to score to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. Harris induced a groundball to shortstop, but Alcantara bobbled the ball then threw it into the Mets dugout which allowed Flores to score to make the score 3-1.

RHP Ryan Searle earned his first victory of the season for Daytona with a perfect ninth inning. Overall, Cubs pitching struck out 11 opponents which is three shy of their season-high.

RHP Erik Goeddel did not allow a run in the start for the Mets. He struck out seven and allowed just five hits over his five innings of work.

Rohan's game-winning RBI was his league leading 35th of the season. Szczur, Alcantara, Noble and Andreoli each had two hits on the evening. Andreoli stole two bases giving him nine on the season.
The 0-0 score in the seventh inning was the longest a Cubs game has been played without a run being scored this season.

Daytona and St. Lucie will get right back at it on Wednesday with a 10:35am scheduled start. RHP P.J. Francescon will make his first start of the season for Daytona and will be opposed by RHP Cory Mazzoni.
