DOGS CHASE GNATS 5-3 IN ELEVEN INNINGS MONDAY



Savannah, GA - TheCharleston RiverDogs scored two runs in the top of the 11th inningto come from behind to beat the Sand Gnats 5-3 Monday night at Historic GraysonStadium. With the win, the Dogs (30-13) dropped the Gnats (26-17) four gamesout of first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division. It is thefurthest the Gnats have been from first place since April 30th.

In the 11th, the Dogs scored the go-ahead run on an RBIdouble from DH Kelvin De Leon offGnats’ reliever Jeffrey Walters.Immediately thereafter, Gnats’ pitching coach Frank Viola was ejected by home plate umpire Junior Valentine, arguing balls and strikes. Charleston added thefifth run on a sacrifice fly to right field by CF Mason Williams. The runs allowed by Walters were his first earnedruns of 2012.

The Gnats built a 3-1 lead after two innings, but the ‘Dogs evenedthe game with single runs in the third and sixth innings. In the sixth, withrunners at second and third, Charleston executed a double-steal as RF Tyler Austin stole home to even thegame.

The RiverDogs scored the game’s first run in the top of the first.CF Mason Williams led off with adouble to left-center field and came home 3B Dante Bichette’s single into right field.

The Gnats took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the bottom of the firstinning. 2B TJ Rivera singled andscored on LF Dustin Lawley’s doubleto deep right-center. Lawley scored on an RBI single into leftfield from 1B Brian Harrison.

The Gnats added a run for a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the secondinning on a Rivera sacrifice fly.

Savannah starter JacobdeGrom allowed his first earned run of the year in his third start. He wascharged with three runs, two earned in 5.2 innings of work, striking out sixand walking one.

The Gnats will send LHP AlexPanteliodis (3-2, 2.94) to the mound Tuesday against ‘Dogs RHP Bryan Mitchell (4-2, 2.63) in game twoof the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
