JACKETS EDGE GNATS 3-2 THURSDAY

Savannah, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets scored in the top of the first inning and led all night before hanging on late to beat the Savannah Sand Gnats 3-2, Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.

The GreenJackets (18-20) hopped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first off Savannah starter Domingo Tapia. Tapia lasted four innings, yielding three runs, all earned, on five hits and two walks, both of which came in the first inning. He struck out five.

The Gnats (24-15) got a run back in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from CF Travis Taijeron to make the score 2-1.

The two teams traded single runs in the fourth on RBI triples. In the top half, GreenJackets’ centerfielder Carlos Willoughby tripled home a run to put Augusta in front, 3-1. In the bottom half, Gnats’ leftfielder Gregory Pron tripled to deep right-center to pull Savannah within a run at 3-2. That was the game’s final scoring.

After Pron’s triple in the fourth inning, Augusta pitching combined to retire the next 13 batters in a row. Gnats’ DH Aderlin Rodriguez interrupted the streak with a leadoff single in the top of the ninth inning. Pinch-runner Tillman Pugh stole second, but, carrying the tying run, was stranded at second base.

GreenJackets’ starter Clayton Blackburn struck out a career-high 10 batters in the win, yielding two runs over six innings for his first win of 2012.  Tapia fell to 3-2 with the loss. Cody Hall earned his league-leading ninth save for the GreenJackets.

The Gnats and GreenJackets play game two of their four-game series Friday night at 7:05 pm when RHP Tyler Pill (3-2, 1.89) for Savannah takes on RHP Chris Marlowe (1-1, 2.63).  Gates open at 6 pm. The radio broadcast on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com begins at 6:45 pm.
