Zapata’s Blast Caps Comeback Win, 6-5



PORTLAND,ME – Pedro Zapata hammered a two-out solo home run over the Maine Monster inthe top of the tenth inning to lead the B-Mets past the Portland Sea Dogs by a6-5 score at Hadlock Field on Saturday afternoon.

Zapata’sblast, his first of the season, capped a game that saw ten combined runs scoredover the final three innings. Trailing 1-0 in the eighth, the B-Mets put upfive runs against two Portland relievers to take their first lead of theseries. Binghamton sent ten men to the plate and compiled six hits, highlightedby a two-run homer by Raul Reyes.

Portlandwasted little time to cut into the deficit. Darin Gorski, in his fifth inningserving as a piggy-back starter to Jenrry Mejia, allowed back-to-back home runsin the eight, cutting Binghamton’s lead to one. Reynaldo Rodriguez ripped atwo-run shot over the Maine Monster and Bryce Brentz followed with a solo linerto left center.

BradHolt ended the threat by recording two outs, but could not restrain thePortland comeback in the ninth. Derrik Gibson started the inning with a singleand scored two batters later on a sac fly from Jeremy Hazelbaker.

Afterallowing five hits in his first two innings of relief, Will Latimer returnedfor the tenth and recorded two quick outs before Zapata launched a 1-2 offeringover the fence in left. Adrian Rosario, promoted from St. Lucie on Friday,tossed a perfect tenth inning to collect his first save.

Itwas a game that began as matchup between two hard-throwing righties. Jenrry Mejiatook the mound for Binghamton and navigated through three innings in his firststart with the B-Mets since August 2010. The righty, rehabbing from Tommy Johnsurgery in May 2011, allowed the leadoff hitter to reach in every frame andsurrendered six hits overall. He struck out three and did not issue any walks.Gorski went 4.1 innings in the no-decision, allowing three runs on three hits.

TheBinghamton Mets could not break through against Portland starter StolmyPimentel. The B-Mets had at least one runner aboard in five innings, but failedto cross home versus the righty. Pimentel matched a season-high by throwing sixinnings, allowing just four hits and striking out six along the way.

Holt(2-0) collected the win after blowing his first save of the season, while Latimer(1-3) surrendered two runs on six hits over 2.1 innings in the loss. Clay wassaddled with his first blown save after allowing four runs on four hits over1.2 innings. It was Binghamton’s first win of the year when trailing afterseven innings (1-17).

TheB-Mets (20-20) complete the series with a rubber match Sunday afternoon at 1:00PM. RHP Greg Peavey takes the ball for the B-Mets against RHP ChrisBalcom-Miller. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 12:45PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
