Friday night in Miami, Marcel Ozuna threw out David Wright
in the 8th and Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the 9th both time’s
they represented the tying run. The Marlins hold off the Mets 3-2. Daisuke Matsuzaka started for Mets and lasted
5 1/3 innings. He left in the 6th trailing 1-0. However, that was
thanks to a replay over-ruling a 2 run homer by Garrett Jones of Dice-K that
was ruled foul. In the 7th
sloppy play by the Mets lead to 2 Marlin runs. Anthony Reckers throw to third
skipped into left field allowing Justin Bour to come home with the 2nd
run, then David Wright made a bare hand swipe at a bouncer that was ruled a double
by Andy Hecchivarria and it was 3-0. The
Mets rallied in the top of the 8th . An RBI single by Wright made it
3-1. Eric Campbell pinch hit with the bases loaded and singled bringing home
Eric Young Jr. with the Mets 2nd run, but Ozuna threw out Wright
trying to score on the play to end the threat. As it turns out Ozuna was just
warming up. In the top of the 9th Nieuwenhuis led off with a pinch
hit double. He was bunted to third by Ruben Tejada. Chris Young then hit a deep
fly to left that normally should have tied the game, but Ozuna uncorked another
seed and threw out Nieuwenhuis to end the game.
Matsuzaka is the hard luck loser. He allowed 6 hits, the 1 run while
walking 1 and striking out 4. He’s now 3-1. Henderson Alvarez threw 6 1/3
scoreless striking out 5 getting the win. He improves to 4-3. Steve Cishek gets
the save. His 17th on the year. The offensive leaders for the Mets were Wright
and Daniel Murphy, both going 2 for 4. The Mets are now 2-3 on this road trip.
On the year they stand at 33-41 and 17-21 on the road. Saturday afternoon it’s game three of the
series. Jacob deGrom (0-4 4.39) looks for his elusive 1st major
league win. Tom Koeheler (5-5 3.84) goes for the fish.
