June 26th 2014 -- Pirates 5, Mets 2
Thursday
night in Pittsburgh, Pirate rookie Gregory Polanco went 2 for 3 with a long
homer and 4 RBI, the Pirates beat the Mets 5-2.
Daisuke Matsuzaka started for the Mets and had a rare poor outing. The Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
3rd on an RBI grounder by Polanco. Lucas Duda hit an opposite field
homer (12) off Pittsburgh starter Vance Worley in the top of the 4th
to tie the game at one. The Pirates “stole” a run in the 4th when on
a designed play Ike Davis was picked off first and thus allowed Andrew McCutchen
to score to make it 2-1. In the bottom of the 5th with 2 on, Polanco
launched a long homer (2) to ice the win for the Pirates. The Mets made it 5-2
in the 8th on back to back doubles by Daniel Murphy and David Wright.
In his first game back off the DL Juan Lagares went 1 for 4. Dice-K went 6 innings allowing 5 hits 5 runs
(all earned) he walked 4 and struck out 4 taking the loss falling to 3-2. Carlos Torres, Josh Edgin and Vic Black
pitched scoreless relief. Worley allowed
1 run in 7 innings on 7 hits picking up the win. He’s now 2-0. Mark Melancon pitched the 9th for
his 14th save. With the loss the Mets fall to 36-43 on the year and
19-22 on the road. Friday night is game 2 of the series. Jacob deGrom (1-4 3.75) looks for his 2nd win.
