Saturday afternoon in Pittsburgh Eric Campbell went 3 for 4
with an RBI and John Niese threw 6 solid innings, the Mets snap their three
game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Pirates. The Mets did their damage
early off Pirate starter Gerrit Cole. The Mets got to Cole, who is just off the
DL,, for three runs on four hits in the top of the 1st on a RBI single by
Campbell, a wild pitch by Cole and an RBI single by Kirk Nieuwenhuis. In the
top of the second after Eric Young Jr. and Curtis Granderson pulled off a double steal of 3rd
and 2nd respectively, Daniel
Murphy stroked an opposite field single to bring them both home with runs 4 and
5. Niese got wild in the 4th
inning and walked Pedro Alvarez and Chris Stewart to bring in a pair of runs.
In the 5th Neil Walker’s RBI single scored the game’s final run. Niese
went 6 innings allowing 7 hits, 3 runs, all earned he walked 3 and struck out
5. He picks up the win improving to 5-4.
Jeurys Familia pitched the 7th and 8th
scorelessly. Jenrry Mejia retired the side 1-2-3 in the 9th for his 8th
save. The Met now stand at 20-23 on the
road this year and 37-44 overall. Sunday the Mets look to clinch a series split
as Bartolo Colon (8-5 3.67) looks for
win number 9. Edinson Volquz (5-6 4.35)
goes for the Pirates.
