St. Lucie, Ft. Myers Split Shutouts
The St. Lucie Mets and Fort Myers split a doubleheader at Tradition Field on Saturday.
Each team pitched a shutout in its win. The Miracle won game 1 3-0 and the Mets took game 2 by a score of 2-0.
The Mets (42-30, 2-1) took two of three in the series and improved to 7-2 against Fort Myers this season.
In game 2, Matt Koch pitched 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball for the Mets. He gave up a leadoff single in the first inning and a one out walk, but then got Adam Brett Walker to ground into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. That started a streak of 15 batters in a row retired.
The Mets scored their first run in the second inning against Steven Gruver. With one out and runners at the corners, Maikis De La Cruz bunted back to Gruver who tried to throw home and get Gilbert Gomez, but Gomez slid in safely.
Jairo Perez drove in the second run for the Mets in the fifth when his infield single with two outs scored Eudy Pina.
Koch ran into his only trouble in the sixth when he gave up back-to-back hits with one out. He settled down to get Aderling Mejia to fly out. T.J. Chism got the final out of the sixth when Nate Roberts grounded out to second.
Paul Sewald pitched around a two-out single in the seventh to earn his first save.
Aderlin Rodriguez went 2 for 3 in game 2. Perez and Gavin Cecchini had the other hits.
Koch got the win to improve to 7-2.
In game 1, Tim Shibuya pitched a complete game shutout for the Miracle. He induced a whopping 16 grounds out and two double plays, including one off the bat of Cole Frenzel that ended the game.
The Miracle pounded out 10 hits in the seven inning game while the Mets only mustered five singles against Shibuya.
On the third pitch of the game, Jorge Polanco lined a comebacker off of starting pitcher Michael Fulmer’s wrist on his glove hand. Fulmer had to be taken out of the game and Julian Hilario took over.
Polanco, who was safe at first on the single, scored on Lance Ray’s sac fly later in the inning.
Adam Brett Walker scored Fort Myers’ second run when he came home from third on a wild pitch by Jake Kuebler in the fourth.
Ray added a two-out RBI double off of Kuebler in the fifth to make it 3-0.
That was plenty of offense for Shibuya. He only gave up one infield single between the second and sixth innings. Team press release
