Wednesday night at Citi Field, a 3rd inning error
by Ruben Tejada proved to be the difference, the Braves beat the Mets 3-2. Zach
Wheeler started for the Mets and got off to a rocky start when Jason Heyward
led off the game with a solo homer to left, his 11th on the year to
make it 1-0. The Mets tied the game at one in the bottom of the 2nd
when Wilmer Flores hit a solo homer, his 2ndof the year. In the 3rd after a bunt single by
Phil Gosselin and a double by Freddie Freeman, the Braves had 2nd
and 3rd with 1 out. A ground
out by Justin Upton made it 2-1, then Tejada booted a grounder by Evan Gattis
and it was 3-1. In the 8th against Jordan Walden, the Mets made it
3-2 when the red hot Juan Lagares singled to center scoring Eric Young Jr. but
that’s all the Mets could manage. They threatened against Greg Kimbrel in the 9th
but he danced through raindrops for his 39th save on the year. Zach Wheeler started for the Mets and pitched
well enough to win, but instead had his 6 game winning streak snapped. He went
7 allowing just 4 hits 3 runs (only 2 earned) he walked 3 and struck out 7.
Wheeler takes the loss falling to 9-9. Julio Teheran got the win improving to
13-9. The Mets offense only managed 6
hits on the night, Lagares and Eric Campbell each had 2 hits apiece. The Mets now stand at 62-71 overall and 31-33
at home. Thursday night the Mets look to
win the rubber game of this 3 game set. Jonathon Niese (7-9 3.47) goes for the Mets, Mike Minor (5-8 4.90) goes for Atlanta.
