The Binghamton Mets collected 15 hits, highlighted by a near-cycle by Dustin Lawley, in an 8-5 victory over the Erie SeaWolves on Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park. Lawley drove in three runs and finished a home run shy of history to lead Binghamton to the rubber match win. The victory cut the B-Mets magic number to clinch a playoff spot down to one.
Dilson Herrera wasted little time putting the B-Mets on the board in the first. The B-Mets second baseman belted a 2-0 pitch from Josh Turley off the arena bordering the left-field wall for his ninth home run as a B-Met. The drive, his 12thoverall in 2014, set a new career-high for Herrera.
Steven Moya offered his response in the second by lining his league-leading 33rd home run of the season over the left-field wall, tying the game at one. It was Moya’s third home run in as many games and seventh against the B-Mets this season.
Binghamton broke the tie game with a two-out rally in the fourth. Darrell Ceciliani and TJ Rivera kept the inning alive with singles, setting the table for Lawley. With just one hit in his last 21 at-bats, Lawley deposited a two-run triple into the right-field alley, giving Binghamton a 3-1 lead.
Gabriel Ynoa settled in following Moya’s blast and navigated through three more scoreless innings before running into a tight spot in the sixth. With two outs, Devon Travis singled and Dean Green walked, bringing Moya to the plate as the go-ahead run. Ynoa struck out Erie’s leading slugger to end the threat and preserve Binghamton’s two-run lead.
The B-Mets extended their lead against the SeaWolves bullpen in the seventh. Kyle Johnson started the rally by lining a one-out triple to the right-field alley off Bryan Augenstein and crossed the plate two batters later when Jayce Boyd rolled a single up the middle. Darrell Ceciliani capped the inning with an RBI single to right, chasing home Herrera.
Binghamton put the game to bed in the eighth, opening the frame with three consecutive doubles. Lawley and Juan Centeno both drove in runs with two-baggers before a throwing error by Francisco Martinez brought home Binghamton’s third tally of the inning.
Trailing by seven, Erie refused to roll over. Dean Green drove in two with a triple in the eighth against Randy Fontanez and Aaron Westlake made it a three-run game with a two-run homer off Cody Satterwhite in the ninth. The B-Mets righty recovered after the blast and registered three consecutive outs to secure the victory.
