Matt Gad - Is a Six Man Rotation Headed To Corona Park?

Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jonathan Niese, Dillon Gee, Jacob deGrom, Rafael Montero, Noah Syndergaard, and Bartolo Colon. Eight starting pitchers under contract that will be healthy enough to pitch in the 2015 baseball season, if they are still part of the Mets. Now, to keep the development of these young arms fresh, is a six-man rotation a possibility? Well, you have to figure that Matt Harvey won't be at his full potential, at least we don't assume so, but then again, he's Harvey, so anything can happen. Even if he can't average that 98 m.p.h. fastball to strike all of those batters out, he's still going to be a dominant force, and lead, or be the second man in a strong rotation next season.

Zack Wheeler is the only one that has little to no limitations. No surgeries, or freak injuries to keep him grounded, and nothing for team brass to want to hold him back because of. Innings limit? Why bother. I'm not saying go all out and risk major injuries with him, and he's not going to be an ace with the current guys on the roster, and even when we go to five or six starters, he probably still won't, but he's definitely a terrific asset to have in the rotation. Through his last ten starts this year, he's undefeated, with an ERA just past 2.00. Wheeler is now 8-8 on the season, and will look to finally show people what he can do.

Oh, did we get a surprise from deGrom earlier this month? Oh, did we ever. What dominance he was able to have, especially after going without too mention from a lot of key people's thinking. Jacob deGrom came up with Rafael Montero earlier this year, and it was like, okay, one's starting, and one will head to the bullpen. Montero had the upper hand. Okay, but wait...the hair, the demeanor, the effectiveness....Jacob deGrom proved he can pitch here in Queens with the big boys, and can be very effective as well.

Niese and Gee. Gee and Niese. Trade rumors are swirling around. In fact, the only reason the Mets definitely have to keep No. 49 is because he is the only lefty in that starting rotation. Dillon Gee is also kind of a lost cause, but not completely. Several years ago, when he came up, he was a dominant force. The others guys weren't even drafted for the most part.

An eight man rotation would be nice!

With a 6 man rotation, and Terry Collins as manager, that would give Familia and Torres about 200 innings each in relief next year.

I think that in about five years a six man rotation is going to be the norm in major league baseball. The Mets are in a position where it makes a lot of sense. They could be playoff contenders and will want their starters in October. They will have several starters on strict inning limits such as Syndergaard and Harvey. They have the pitching depth. The reduced work load could save someone like Wheeler from being a future TJS victim.
I think a six man rotation would be more effective than totally shuting down pitchers for periods during the season.

It will never happen.

Concentrate efforts on finding 5 decent pitchers first
