BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets put up a late rally in game two to split a doubleheader with the New Britain Rock Cats on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets dropped game one, 5-1, but took game two 3-2. The team scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on to work the victory.
Rock Cats 5, B-Mets 1
In game one, the B-Mets were the first to cross the plate. After Jose Berrios got the first two runners of the game out, Brian Burgamy doubled. He came around to score on a RBI single by Jayce Boyd to make the score 1-0.
New Britain answered in the second. Gabriel Ynoa hit Mike Gonzales with nobody out. Eddie Rosario laced a one-out single. Tony Thomas cleared the bases on a three-run home run to left to put the road team on top, 3-1.
The Rock Cats added to that total in the third. Levi Michael and Jorge Polanco each singled to start the frame. With runners on the corners, Nate Hanson grounded into a fielder’s choice to make it a three-run ball game. New Britain added one more score when Reynaldo Rodriguez plated Hanson on a fielder’s choice to make the score 5-1.
Ynoa (3-2) tossed a complete-game and struck out seven, but surrendered five runs in the loss. Berrios (3-4) surrendered just one run in six frames and shutout Binghamton over the final six innings.
B-Mets 3, Rock Cats 2
The Rock Cats got on the board first in game two. Hansel Robles walked Michael to start the game. He moved to third base on a ground rule double by Hanson. With Rodriguez at the plate, Robles threw a wild pitch that brought home a runner for 1-0 New Britain lead.
Binghamton tied the game in the fourth against Adrian Salcedo. Brandon Nimmo, Dilson Herrera, and Burgamy tacked back-to-back-to-back singles to start the inning. Boyd grounded in to a double play that scored a runner to knot the game at one.
New Britain took the lead again in the fifth. Paul Sewald walked Polanco with one out. He scored on a Hanson double to put the road team back out in front, 2-1.
Binghamton rallied again in the fifth. Dustin Lawley reached on catcher’s interference. Xorge Carrilo singled to put two on with nobody out. A sac bunt from Wilfredo Tovar moved each runner up a bag. With Kyle Johnson at the plate, Matt Koch let a ball get passed him behind the plate that allowed the tying run to score. After a walk, Nimmo was up when Salcedo tossed a wild pitch to plate Carrillo for the go-ahead run.
Dario Alvarez closed out the final 1-1/3 innings by striking out three batters for his first Double-A save. Sewald (1-0) earned the win in his Double-A debut. Robles gave up one run in 3-2/3 frames and didn’t factor into the decision.
The B-Mets (83-53) and the Rock Cats play game four of their five-game set on Wednesday at 6:35 PM. RHP Tyler Pill goes for Binghamton against a pitcher to be announced. POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton scored all three runs in game two without the aid of an RBI…It was their sixth double-header sweep of the season…The teams combined to go 4-21 with RISP over the two games.
