Mets Minor League Report: August 25, 2014.

Mets Minor League Player of the Day: Binghamton RHSP Rainy Lara.
Honorable Mention: Binghamton RHRP Cody Satterwhite & GCL Mets RHSP Kevin Canelon.

After a spotty minor league career, fraught with injury, the 27 yr old Satterwhite emerged with the Mets last year, , and is doing even better this year, earning his 15th save, with a 1.64 ERA, as Bingo’s closer.

The 20 yr old Canelon is quietly demonstrating that his last 2 years in the DSL were not flukes. He is doing even better in his first season stateside, with a 1.45 ERA.

Las Vegas (77- 60) leads Round Rock (67-68) 8-3 after 7 ½ innings, as I trundle off to bed.

Matthew Bowman stands to earn a win if Las Vegas holds their lead: 5.0 IP, 3 R, 7 H, 4 BB, 6 K.
Erik Goeddel: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB.
Jack Leathersich: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K. (Anotherr typical day at the office for Smilin‘ Jack.)

Matt Reynolds: 1-4, 2 RBI, R, 2 SB.
Josh Satin: 2-4, RBI, R, SB.
Brandon Allen: 2-3, 2B, BB, RBI, R.
Kevin Plawecki: 2-4, R.
Anthony Seratelli: 2-3, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R.

Binghamton (82-52) nicks New Britain (67-67) 4-1.

Rainy Lara: 7.2 IP, R, 5 H, BB, 4 K.
Chase Hutchingson: (W, 4-1) 0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, BB.
Cody Satterwhite: (S, 15) 1.0 IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB, K.

T.J. Rivera: 2-3, 2B, BB, RBI, 2 R. (Like the Energizer Bunny, Rivera just keeps on hitting, and hitting, and hitting, raising his avg. to .367.)
Dustin Lawley: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R.
Kyle Johnson: 2-4, RBI.

Folks, go back to the pitching line. This is a travesty, and a prime example for my argument that the official scorer should have discretion over who is awarded the W. (or the L) Rainy Lara pitched an outstanding game, but was denied the win because he was taken out one batter too early. Hutchingson is a fine pitcher, but he only faced 2 batters, made a wild pitch, walked one, and then got the final out of the inning. There is no way Hutch should have gotten credit for the win after all of Lara’s hard work.

Charlotte (63-64) stuns St. Lucie (71-61) 8-5.

After leading 4-0 and 5-4, St. Lucie surrenders 4 runs in the 9th inning to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Angel Cuan: 5.0 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 H, BB, 2 K.
Julian Hilario: 2.0 IP, 0 R, H, 2 BB, K.
Robert Coles: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, BB, K.
T.J. Chism: (BS, 4) 1.0 IP, 4 R, 3 H, (HR) BB, 2 K.

Maikis De La Cruz: 3-4, 2 2B, BB, 2 R.
L.J. Mazzilli: 3-5, R.
Jairo Perez: 2-4, RBI, 2 R.
Jared King: 2-4, 3B, RBI.

Savannah (82-47) not scheduled.

A day off is a needed tonic for Savannah. As I posted yesterday, “After reaching 40 games over .500 (you read right, 82-42) the mighty Sand Gnats have now lost 5 in a row. Adding insult to injury, all to vastly inferior teams, each one 20+ games under .500.”

Staten Island (35-33) nips Brooklyn (38-31) 2-1 in 10 innings.

Alberto Baldonado: 4.0 IP, R, 0 ER, 3 H, 4 BB, 3 K.
Carlos Valdez: 3.2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, BB, 4 K.
Kelly Secrest: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, BB, 2 K.
Brad Wieck (L, 0-1) makes 1 mistake and pays for it: 0.2 IP, R, H, (HR) 0 BB, 2 K.

Adrian Abreu: 2-5, 2B, SB.
Michael Conforto: 2-5, RBI.

Johnson City (34-30) jams Kingsport (33-31) 5-3.

Yoan Gonzalez: (L, 1-4) 4.0 IP, 4 R, 5 H, BB, 5 K.
Matt Blackham: 3.0 IP, R, 0 ER, 2 H, BB, 6 K.
Ismael Tijerina: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, BB, 2 K.
Ruben Reyes: 1.0 IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB, K.

Seven hits, spread among seven different players, doesn’t result in much offense.
Vicente Lupo: 1-3, HR, BB, 3 RBI, R.

GCL Cardinals (33-23) clip GCL Mets (31-26) 4-0.
Kevin Canelon: 6.1 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 K.
Nabil Crismat: 1.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, BB, 3 K.
Brent McMinn: (L, 0-2) 1.1 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 H, 2 BB, 2 K.
Gabriel Feliz: 0.1 IP, R, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 BB.
Connor Buchmann: 0.1 IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB.

With only 1 hit (0 BB’s) there were no offensive highlights for the Mets.

Agree with you on that rule with Lara, Herb.

Vicente Lupo, with his HR last nite, has splits of roughly .400/.600/.900 in his last 17 games. Vicente is back!

Lupo has been CRAZY hot and is drawing a ton of walks along the way. Even though Becerra has cooled of late, I would love to see them both join Rosario and Urena to start next year in Savannah. I think there is some value to putting high ceiling prospects on the same team and travel the minor league levels together. Imagine Lupo, Becerra, Urena, Conforto, Rosario and Smith in the same lineup. I think hitters feed and compete off one another, but Conforto and Smith are likely to start in STL next year and not enough OF spots to accommodate Lupo, Becerra and Conforto. I think next year, the shift from Met pitching prospect to hitting will take place. Apart from Nimmo, Herrara, Reynolds and I still think Puello being in the upper minors, Low and High A are going to show big offensive potential. I know Mack always says don't fall in love with your prospects, but it has been a very long time since the Mets had this many bats on the Farm. You need inventory to account for flame outs and it looks like next year, they will have the sort of offensive inventory that they have had in pitching the last few years.

And what do we do with TJ?

I don't see any reason why Lupo can't make the jump to Savannah. He's old enough plus he's been around enough.
