#20      Devin Taylor

OF        Indiana

20/years old

6' 1"      215

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 60 | Run: 45 | Arm: 45 | Field: 45 | Overall: 50

Though Taylor was the best offensive prospect in Ohio's 2022 high school class, his game wasn't well-rounded enough to try to draft him away from an Indiana commitment. He's the first Hoosier to earn all-Big Ten Conference first-team honors in each of his first two seasons, setting the school freshman RBI record with 59 in 2023 and topping the league with 20 homers last spring. He made a brief appearance with the U.S. collegiate national team before continuing to perform well with wood bats in the Cape Cod League.

Taylor shows the potential to become a plus hitter in terms of both average and power while controlling the strike zone. A left-handed hitter with plenty of bat speed and strength, he hits the ball extremely hard and generates power to all fields. He can get a little chase-happy at times but makes consistent contact and has no problems handling breaking pitches.

The majority of Taylor's value will come from his offensive production. His speed, arm strength and defensive instincts all grade as fringy. Indiana may try him in center field this spring but he's definitely a left fielder in pro ball.

27. Cleveland Guardians: Devin Taylor, OF, Indiana

Devin Taylor of Indiana has one of the best bats in the Big Ten. Last season with the Hoosiers, the left-handed-hitting Taylor crushed 20 home runs with 54 RBI to go along with a 1.109 OPS. He also raked in the Cape Cod League, posting a .907 OPS with five home runs and 16 RBI in 29 games. Taylor, who is from Ohio, stays in-state as the Cleveland Guardians nab him with the 27th pick.

No. 9 Cincinnati Reds: Devin Taylor, Indiana Baseball

This is the most obvious pick for the Cincinnati Reds for a number of reasons.

Two of the three greatest players to ever play for the Reds were from Cincinnati: Pete Rose (Western Hills High School) and Barry Larkin (Moeller High School). The Reds also love to sign players from the city in free agency (like Brent Suter).

Taylor went to LaSalle High School in Cincinnati. At Indiana, he made All-Big Ten in back-to-back years. Baseball America has him as the No. 8 prospect. He’s No. 13 at FloBaseball.

Taylor hit .357/.449/.660 with 11 doubles and 20 home runs in 2024. He is considered one of the top hitters in college baseball and projects to be a corner outfielder at the next level.

Taylor opens the season in Surprise, Arizona, at the College Baseball Classic.

21. Houston Astros: OF Devin Taylor, Indiana

The top draft prospect in the Big Ten this season, Taylor hit .357/.449/.660 with 20 home runs last spring, then followed that up with a .907 OPS and 10 extra-base hits in 29 games in the Cape Cod League. He had almost as many walks (37) as strikeouts (38), showcasing the advanced approach to maximize his power tool, and he will go as far as his bat carries him with limited defensive value and speed.

9. Devin Taylor – OF

HT/WT: 6’1/215 | Bat/Throw: L/R | School: Indiana | Age: 21.6

A physical left-handed bat with strength throughout his frame, Taylor is a legitimate power threat with burgeoning raw juice and he lets his quality athleticism play on the field.

He built upon a stellar freshman campaign at Indiana with a .357/.449/.660 slash line and blasting twenty home runs, the first Hoosier to do so since Alex Dickerson smacked twenty-four in 2010.

Taylor’s pitch recognition is strong and his pure contact improved, jumping to a rate just under 80% in 2024 with chase rates that grade out as average. He’s short to the baseball with a ton of bat speed and strength, allowing him to tap into his above-average to plus power in-game.

His power plays to both sides of the field, utilizing the opposite field more this past spring, though the power plays better to his pull side.

There’s a good likelihood that Taylor will get some playing time in center field for the Hoosiers in 2025, though his average arm and speed, paired with his route running, likely relegates him to a future left field role.

If he can prove to handle the “eight” in 2025, he may wind up being the first college bat off the board.

College Baseball Player Of The Year Award Predictions For 2025

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/college-baseball-player-of-the-year-award-predictions-for-2025/

Big Ten

Player of the Year: Devin Taylor (Indiana)

Taylor last year became the first Indiana player ever to earn first-team all-Big Ten honors in each of his first two college seasons. He also finished the campaign ranked second all-time in total home runs hit by an Indiana player in his first two campaigns.

The 2025 first-round hopeful led the Big Ten in home runs (20), runs scored (67) and total bases (159) last season and also produced a .357 batting average and nearly as many walks (37) as strikeouts (38). With an advanced approach and plenty of pop, Taylor enters his junior season as one of the top bats in the country, let alone in his conference.

15. Devin Taylor, OF, Indiana

There is big power in the bat, but he had a bit more swing and miss in the Cape than he did at Indiana. The bat is likely average, but the chance for plus power in the bat is real and this is where college performers go.

The best prospect produced by the Hoosiers since Kyle Schwarber went No. 4 overall in 2014, Taylor has a similar profile.

14. Tampa Bay Rays

Devin Taylor, OF — Indiana

HOMETOWN: Cincinnati, Ohio

HEIGHT: 6-0

WEIGHT: 215

BAT/THROW: L-R

The Hoosiers outfielder enjoyed a very nice sophomore season where he slashed .357/.449/.660 with 20 homers and nearly as many walks as strikeouts.

The profile is led by the bat and he’ll need to once again thump in 2025 if he hopes to realize his top-ten pick ceiling. The defensive tools are limited and Taylor likely ends up in left field, but there’s a chance he’s a .280 hitter capable of depositing 25 homers.

OF Devin Taylor - University of Indiana

Athlete with legitimate power. That’s the best way to describe Taylor. The Indiana outfielder has etched himself as one of the best college bats in the NCAA. He hit 20 home runs and drove in 54 to the tune of a .357/.449/.660 slash line.

The power comes from his bat speed and strength, and he isn’t afraid to show it to all parts of the field. When I caught Taylor last year in live looks, he struggled at the plate due to issues with chasing out of the zone and velocity up.

He rolled over a lot of pitches or popped things up. But that could’ve been weather-related, as both days were insanely cold with massive wind gusts. Despite his struggles, he was trying to make things happen for his team, whether bunting for a base hit, taking a walk, or trying to cause chaos on the base paths.

Even though he’s a below-average runner, he wasn’t afraid to try and take an extra base. There is a good chance he mans centerfield in 2025, but he likely ends up at as a left-field type at the next level.

He went unselected in the 2022 Major League Baseball draft and enrolled at Indiana University to play college baseball. As a freshman for Indiana in 2023, Taylor spent the season as Indiana's starting right fielder, also starting four games in left field. He played in 55 games (51 starts) and batted.315 with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs. - wikipedia.org

8/11/24 - Sports Gambling Podcast - 2025 Mock Draft

Devin Taylor has lightning bat speed supported by an athletic frame. Scouts suggest Taylor has raw power but I’m not sure how much projection is left for Taylor as he is already 6-0, 215 pounds. In over 500 plate appearances Taylor has a .338 average with a 1.096 OPS and 36 home runs. Taylor is a great runner and average defender in the outfield.
