Tom Brennan: Mets Majors/Minors Action; Yunior Amparo; Josmir Reyes; Soto

You Can Always Find Marvelous Mets Guppies Doing Neat Stuff in the Minors

5 games Wednesday. 5 wins.  5 WOW’S.

Jonathan Pintaro goes from Indy ball to the NY Mets….Amazin’.

He struggled in the 9th - nerves vs. the heart of the Braves’ order.

But Diaz bailed him out in the 7-3 win.

Now that some other players have been promoted up the minor league ladder, how have the organization’s teams done in recent days?

Well, in their Tuesday AA debuts, Carson Benge went 0-3 and a walk, while Jacob Reimer went 0-3 with a HBP, but Ryan Clifford hit his 12th in a 4-3 loss.

DSL DAZZLERS

The DSL’s SS, Yunior Amparo, is off to a truly terrific start. Through Tuesday, he has gone 13 for 26 (.500), with 5 walks, 4 steals, and 2 home runs, 4 total extra base hits, .500/.588/.846. I’ve watched stats on so many DSL guys in recent years, and these stats by comparison are extraordinary.

Also off the charts? Josmir Reyes.  44 plate appearances, on base 22 times, fantastic slash line, and (what!?) ONE strikeout!

Two impressive hombres, huh?

Osiris Calvo, age 21, is 2-0, 1.23 so far.

Elsewhere in Metsville:

Remember Hoss Cartwright of Bonanza? Sing with me, “Po…po…po..Ponderosa.”

Well, the Mets have a 24 year old named Hoss Brewer.

Mostly in St Lucie, now in Brooklyn, the Undrafted righty has had 20 outings in 2025 and is 3-0, 0.93 ERA, 29 IP, 35 Ks. Great pro debut season.

6’4”, 22 y/o Cristofer Gomez has been groovin’, too, going 5-0, 2.87, 50 Ks in 31 IP.

On Tuesday, in Syracuse, Luisangel Acuna went 3-4, and a walk, in his first game since being demoted. Then, Wednesday, 2 for 5. Keep that up, and force a conversation.

Mark Vientos was 0-4 with 2 walks on Tuesday. He was just 2-21 in his rehab through Tuesday. But on Wednesday, 2 for 2 and a walk. Ready?

And Yonny Hernandez added 3 hits Wednesday to climb to .339.

Moving on, Nick Morabito 3 hits and his 29th steal in a 5-1 Binghamton win.

Brooklyn improved to an astonishing 50-21 with a 2-1 win on HRs by Baez and Baro, Brooklyn’s only two hits of the night. Will Watson has found Coney Island to his liking, with a 1.96 ERA over 18.1 High A innings.

St Lucie won 1-0 on an unearned run.

The Mets thankfully did not have to face the injured super ace Chris Sale, and scored some runs (7) and had many hits (13).  SIZZLING Juan Soto hit # 18 and # 19. On his 2nd HR, Michael Harris just missed robbing him of that HR.  Mauricio (.223) hit his 3rd and had 3 hits overall, Baty (.224) had two hits, and McNeil (.253) had two, as well, enlivening the bottom half of the line up.

The Flying Squirrel also made a spectacular leaping catch to rob the mighty Ozuna of a HR.  Of course, Francisco Lindor was later robbed of a 2 run HR.

ME? I have an idea….

Move the fences in.

Starter Clay Holmes (8-4) rode to the rescue. 7-3 much-needed win.

And the season rolls on.

After last night, you could see why they’d prefer Mauricio over LA Acuna….that POWER.

So, yes, I think it is inevitable that Young goes down. He gave us some moments, but…

The Mets need to sit down Vientos prior to his activation

They need to explain to him that he is 3rd in line to be the future Mets third baseman (Baty. Mauricio) and his future as a Met is only as a DH and emergency 1B

If that doesn't float his boat, they would gladly look for a team that could fulfill his dreams

Vientos will never become our future third baseman. Future DH, maybe.

and Ronnie just missed a 3 run HR the night before.

remembering that the Bravos gave us last nights game so can we win tonight?

My Gut feeling is that Vientos will get 50% of playing time, with Baty splitting time at 3B/2B and Mauricio getting time at 2B/Lefty DH and emergency SS.

McNeil back to super utility role. Just my take on Mets brass mindset.

I especially would like to keep Mauricio in the lineup for two reasons

1. He’s welding a hot bat

2. I'd like to see the results after 100 more straight starter at bats

I still.think he's a keeper

I may have this wrong but with Pintaro and Waddell in Queens, Syracuse is down to three starters

Could see a return of Hamel

McNeil will play 75%, in my opinion. Then, Vientos, Mauricio, and Baty get to duke it out for most of the 3rd base/DH at bats. Someone gets hot, they play more. Remember, after the All Star break in 40 games, McNeil hit .290 with a .550 slug. He may not do that, but we need a reliable bat to win the division, and he is most likely to be that of the four.

Me?

Keep establishing Hamel as a future Mets reliever

Keep Waddell in the Mets pen

Try to develop Pintaro as a multiple inning reliever

Promote Tong to Syracuse

Promote Wenninger to Syracuse

Sale getting injured May have saved the Mets’ season.

I think McNeil will get considerable time in CF, freeing up some playing time for the kiddies. Right now, the kids have to play as much as possible to:

1. See what the heck we have with them
2. Establish some trade value at the deadline.

Marte and Winkler will be gone next year. Ideally the kids will replace them...one can only hope.

This Acuna kid is something! 5 hits in two games. Another Lindor, another Crow Armstrong?

Anonymous said...

Really? Baty or Mauricio might become big leaguers but the jury is still out. More confidence in Vientos.

Vientos,DH,Baty,3B,Mauricio 2B. Simple

Mack Ade said...

Agree

JoeP said...

What do you do with Marte

Les Elkins said...

I agree with Anonymous and Mack ,Play Vientos at DH,Baty at 3rd Base,Mauricio at 2nd base and McNeil in center against R/H pitchers. Trade Marte at the trade deadline.. It is difficult for young players to start then sit etc. Lets see what we have with these baby Mets.

I don't see the Mets embarrassing him with a DFA

Try to move him while still paying lion share of remaining contract. If that doesn't work keep him around for backup role

Tom,
Check out the DSL scores today. Pena came alive.

Tom Brennan said...

DJ, Peña sure did. 4 hits, 3 HR, 8 RBI in a 20-19 Donnybrook. WOW.

I wish I saw that game. And it was a 7 inning game!

Tom Brennan said...

DJ, and how about Josmir Reyes in the same game? 2 for 3, 2 walks. Up 50 times, ONE STRIKEOUT? Who the heck is he?
