Tom Brennan: Will Not Facing Skenes Boost the Mets? Winker. Braves Draft Savvy

THINGS HAPPEN IN 3s: SENGA, MEGILL, AND NOW CANNING HURT

With the 10 of 11 loss streak stopped by a decisive 7-3 win on Wednesday night, the Mets concluded their 4 game series with Atlanta by starting Canning vs. the Braves’ Grant Holmes. Now a 2 game win streak, but Canning’s Mets career looks to be over, after his Achilles injury; however, the Mets pen shut Atlanta down 4-0 Thursday to stay 10 games ahead of the damaged Braves, whose loss of the deadly Chris Sale may have been the death knell to their playoff hopes.

They are 22nd in runs scored, and although Acuna’s return should allow them to rise from there, they are not a super potent offense now. Marcel Ozuna is closing in on age 35 and has slipped from his prior two great seasons, at .247/11/40. Is age catching up a bit?

Moving on to Pittsburgh, it appears the Mets will thankfully get to skip the dynamic Paul Skenes. Pittsburgh is not unbeatable 8-9 in his 17 starts, but otherwise is just afar worse 24-41.  Time to make hay in Steel Town? Well, they got crushed in game 1, although Soto jacked # 20. Peterson was off, and Tidwell’s 10.13 ERA screams “I ain’t ready”.

In the “Battle of the B Team” last night, Brett Baty had 2 doubles in 4 ABs, Mauricio was 1 for 3 and a walk, and Vientos 0-4 with 2 Ks. “Loser by a split decision, Mark the Mauler Vientos.” Of course, since the Mets scored on just the one “Solo Soto”, none of the 3 scored nor drove in a run.

I would have started Jonah Tong vs. limp-hitting Pittsburgh. But he started (and again dominated) for the wrong team - AA Binghamton.

These pittsburghers ain’t the Clemente/Stargell Bucs at the dish, regardless of Friday’s blowout of the Mets. Going into this series, to visualize this, half way through the season, the Dodgers have already scored 200 more runs than the Pirates. But every games is contested.

Jacob Reimer hit his first AA HR, and has 5 RBIs in 12 at bats. Reimer is a Climber. Benge 2 for 3. Trey Snyder 4 for 4 for St Lucie. Aracena was great.

BRAVES KEEP DRAFTING IMPACT PLAYERS IN LOWER ROUNDS

In 2022, the Mets drafted Kevin Parada at #11…he’s still in AA and trying to show he’s got enough to eventually get to the show.

Jett at #14, coming along nicely in AA. Hopes that he will be a good one.

Tidwell at #52, and for him, the jury is still out.

Morabito at #75, and he is certainly looking promising in AA.

Sproat at #90. Same comment as for Tidwell.

The Braves then drafted catcher Drake Baldwin at #96. In his MLB rookie season, he has 9 HRs and a .288 average in his first 156 MLB at bats.

 - How the heck do the Braves do it?

 - Strider, Harris, and now Baldwin, all 3rd round or later picks.

 - And, Undrafted, they once signed a prospect named Ronald Acuna, Jr.

 - For a mere $100,000. How do they do it?

A “WINK” AND A NOD

A July acquisition, of sorts?

Jesse Winker

Current Injury: Right oblique strain

IL date: May 5

Expected return: Mid-July

Recent Status: Took 26 swings in the batting cage without any problems on June 26. If things go according to plan, the helmet-slamming Winker will be the designated hitter for High-A Brooklyn starting June 29. (Which is tomorrow).

- I’m nodding up and down at the thought.

In a line up with too many limp at bats, he is a tough at bat when healthy.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS PLAYER?

First half of the season, .253, .343 OBP, 301 at bats, 13 doubles, 3 triples, 12 HRs, 45 RBIs.

T

NICE. VERY NICE. TRADE FOR HIM.

THE METS ALREADY HAVE “HIM”.

“He” is Jeff McNeil + Starling Marte.

Oh, and the last 30 days? A combined .275 with a .500 slug %.

So, for all of you dingleberries that want to get rid of them, beware what you wish for. You get your wish, the Mets go home after game 162.

JOSMIR, ELIAN, RINCON, YORBER, YUNIOR ARE COOKING

Josmir Reyes in 53 plate appearances? Just 1 K, that’s right, 1 K, in 53 PAs, and he’s gotten on base 31 times.  Who, frankly, is this guy?

Elian Peña started out 0 for 28. Since then, he has been awesome…he is 10 for his last 25 with 10 walks, including his 4 hit, 3 HR, 8 RBI game. “Bounceback.”

Heriberto Rincon has 60 at bats and 13 steals, a Rickey Henderson pace.

Yorber Semprun so far is .400/.550/.667.

Yunior Amparo is .412/.523/.765 so far

These are not your normal DSL player stats, not by no means. These are freaky.

Can't believe Alvy and Vientos crapped out so quickly and all this talk of "are we gonna resign Alonso and Diaz" really? W/O them were not even a.500 team which brings the question are we sellers at the deadline? Crazy talk for sure but based on the last couple of weeks not so crazy.

Vito. Here. Alonso or Tucker? Diaz? Doesn’t pitch two days in a row, doesn’t pitch more than one inning. Maybe, maybe not

Important

Still leads league in lowest starter ERA

Diaz in 2022 was the team’s MVP. He is oneof the indispensable ones this year. He stays.

Gary: this team was built to win this year. I think any actions will follow that goal.

Give him a week. I think his rehab starts today. Good lefty DH if healthy.

Tom not if were just above .500 in a month

Gary, I think the Mets have a lot of decent minor league hitters that other teams might covet. So maybe they package some of those and a moderate pitching prospect for someone really good who’s a Rental. I haven’t given it any thought yet, but there are minor league real chips, unlike other years. When Binghamton and Brooklyn combined are 50 games over 500, then you know that this year is different in terms of the quantity of tradable chips.

Gary, so if they are still in the playoff hunt, at end of July, no white flag in Soto’s first year.

Pete Crow Armstrong!

If the NL MVP vote was today, a strong chance Pete Crow Armstrong wins it. What a jackass trade that was.

And yet he was once a minor league chip

Don't know what a minor league chip is.
