Morning Thoughts
First, let’s get through the two elephants
in the chain that both should be drinking water with a new herd weeks ago.
Nolan McLean/Syracuse – 6/27: 6-IP, 4-H, 2-ER, 3-BB, 4-K, 85/53
“Mr. Consistency” has done it again. He now hasn't given up more than two runs
in eight of his last nine starts. This was his 9th appearance for
Syracuse, seven of which he started. Also, early on started five for
Binghamton. For those of you that skipped math in school, that’s 14 times he
has been on the mound so far this season. ERA’s… 1.37/AA… 2.72/AAA… 2.25 total.
Syracuse WHIP: 1.25. Only area needed to work on is 22-BB in 49.2-AAA/IP.
Jonah Tong/Binghamton – 6/27: 6-IP, 3-H. 1-ER,3-BB, 8-K, 92/60, 1.73
Tom says this is the best Mets pitching prospect since Tom Seaver. There might be some
truth to this. You’re not going to find anything bad here this season… 14
starts… a 0.92-WHIP… and the sweet stat is 115-K in 73-IP
There continues to be no reason for
either of these two to remain on the team they are playing for, other than
wanting them to play in their respective all-star games while their parent team
is running out of qualified starters. This is like owning two thoroughbred race
horses and only running them on open field neighborhood sprint races while the
rest of the red meat keeps coming up lame for the racing team.
Tyler Megill, Griffin Canning, and Kodai Senga are down for the count.
Sean
Manaea is still rehabbing. This leaves David Peterson, Clay Holmes, and Frankie Montas as the only current
healthy starters. Paul Blackburn has failed here. So has
Blade
Tidwell. Speaking of Peterson, he now has lost four of his last five
starts, giving up 16 runs in 30.2 innings pitched.
Only other options in Syracuse would be Brandon Sproat and Dom Hamel, but that team is
having a hard time fielding a full rotation of their own.
Me?
Well, first I sure as hell I wouldn’t
rehab Manaea in Syracuse anymore. If he is already producing starts in the
50/60 pitch, or 5/6 inning range, then he can easily do this back where he
belongs. This is not a rookie that will allow the big crowd and increased noise
get in the way here. Bring him home now.
Then promote either McLean or Tong to
the parent club. Your choice here. I would take the conservative route and pick
McLean. We all know who Tom would pick. Your call.
Then, you need to call all your affiliates
and get thing moving up. You have four openings in the Syracuse rotation,
either Tong or McLean will join Sproat. Leave Hamel in the pen. He’s converting
excellently there. Promote Jack Wenninger, Zach Thornton, and Joander Suarez from
Binghamton.
By my count, this would leave all five
Binghamton rotation slots empty. Like I said, you need to make more than one
phone call this morning.

It will continue to be a busy time in the front office to re-shuffle this deck. I agree with your suggestions, except that I believe Tong should be pitching in Syracuse first. So many prospects, no matter how heavily touted, have stuggled in AAA, so there is learning to be done at that level. Sproat was the latest to hit this wall and he has still not yet recovered.
I agreed with you on Tong here
By September Think both McClean and Tong are in the rotation. I think both make rot
Rot?
Explain...
Tong had an off night in Binghamton: 6 innings, 3 hits, one run and 8 Ks. That is an off night for him, as he usually dominates more. Will they trade for a veteran starter? Or eke by thru the ASB, Hope the wheels don’t fall off, (hopefully) get Manaea and his elbow chips back, and then promote one of them? And why is Tong still in AAA, after the most devastating prolonged stretch of Mets minors pitching dominance since Gooden 1983?
Mack. I think Rot equals Rotation, but that is just a guess.
I touch on the emerging superstars in the Mets system at 10 AM. A MUST-READ!
Pirates LHSP Bailey Falter would be a good target.
Not hitting with RISP sucks and could very well kill us for anything good in the post season but first you have to make the postseason and then how do you change it? Two good wins and then losing to the Pirates who don't score 9 runs in a week is just plain embarrassing as we looked tired and uninterested. Also what about this team screams Playoffs to you? After looking like we might end up having the best record in baseball the last 2 weeks are a reality check for sure as the Rays who kicked our butts not long ago have almost the same record as we do spending a third the playroll and if I'm Stevie I want answers right now!
Frankly the Mets need no help in kicking their butt
They do that well enough to themselves
make rotation and start playoffgames
They better not trade Tong for a veteran starter
Superstars? Here we go again.
I just got up to date on Manaea"s setback
Damm
So much for my plan
