Catcher Onix Vega was transferred to St.
Lucie on June 20th. He went out and went 3-4, 1-R, double, 2-RBI,
.750/.750/1.000/1.750.
Vega is a 5-9, 200-lb RHH catcher that
was drafted by the Nationals in the 20th round of the 2018 draft,
out of Broward College (FL). Signed with the Mets on 1-10-25. Born in Puerto
Rico but schooled in Florida. One year deal for $125K.
Contact hitter… .376-OBP in high-A in
2022. Has a knack of getting on base.
Too old for low-A and is considered a
depth option throughout all the Mets minor league affiliates.
Not exactly a top prospect, but not
chopped liver either.
Top Rental Arms and Bats on the
Block at the MLB Trade Deadline
https://www.justbaseball.com/mlb/rental-arms-bats-mlb-trade-deadline-candidates/
Framber Valdez, Houston Astros:
If there is a rental ace that contending teams should be eyeing
at this year’s trade deadline, it is Framber Valdez. Now there is no guarantee
that Valdez will even be on the market, but if the Astros decide to put him on
the table, they could receive a haul.
Valdez has been one of the most effective starting
pitchers in all of baseball, as he has pitched to a sub-3.50 ERA in every
season since the 2021 campaign, all while making almost every start. He has one
legendary postseason run under his belt, when he pitched to a 1.44 ERA as the
ace of the 2022 World Series champion Houston Astros.
This year, Valdez is looking like an All-Star (would be his third selection), having pitched to a 3.09 ERA across his first 15 starts. There are pitchers with control who might fetch a bigger haul, but there is no better rental that could be put on the table than Valdez.
Zac Gallen, Arizona Diamondbacks:
Another frontline starting pitcher on a team that is caught in
the middle of contending and selling right now. Over the past three seasons,
Gallen has been a staple atop the D-Backs rotation, and he has two top-five Cy
Young finishes to show for it.
The plan was for Gallen to form a dynamic 1-2 punch with
Corbin Burnes this season that would push Arizona back into contention to
return to the World Series. Unfortunately, Burnes is on the shelf with an elbow
injury, and the D-Backs are trying to hang on in the early Wild Card race.
With Gallen set to hit free agency after the season, the
D-Backs would be irresponsible not to listen to what they can get back for
their 29-year-old ace. Gallen has pitched to a 5.19 ERA through his first 15
starts, so his value is not near Valdez’s right now, but his upside is
certainly still attractive.
The D-Backs will just have to weigh their chances to contend this year, and whether they can get something better than the comp pick they would receive if Gallen turns down a qualifying offer and signs elsewhere.
Seth Lugo, Kansas City Royals:
The Royals inking Lugo to a deal that only pays him $15 million a year
is looking more and more savvy by the day. The 35 year-old pitched to a 3.00
ERA last season in 206.2 innings and is currently at a 3.05 ERA this year. He’s
been about as stable as they come.
However, Lugo is pitching too well for the Royals and
will likely opt-out of his final year and look for more money and term this
winter. Although it has been a good marriage, I doubt Kansas City will look to
pay top dollar to a pitcher entering the later part of his career.
Arkansas
Shortstop Wehiwa Aloy Wins the 47th Golden Spikes Award
This
year’s winner defined all of those traits. Aloy was an incredible performer for
the Razorbacks all season long and helped Arkansas in their incredible run to a
50-15 record and College World Series run.
Off the
field, Aloy was an absolute leader in the clubhouse and played the game with a
ton of passion and integrity. The kind of guy you want to build your entire
team around.
Aloy was a
steady producer in the Razorbacks lineup where he slashed .350/.434/.673 with
19 2B, two 3B, 21 HR, and 68 RBI while stealing nine bags. As Wehiwa Aloy went
so did the rest of the Razorbacks lineup.
On the
defensive side of the ball, it was a thing of beauty. He showcased incredible
range all season long and could just make the huge play at any time. He made
just five errors on the entire season, posting a .978 fielding percentage.
Could Mets
explore infield help at the deadline?
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6444615/2025/06/23/new-york-mets-infield-conundrum/
Entering
Sunday, the Mets’ offensive production from the third-base position in June
ranks as MLB’s worst in multiple categories. Their third basemen this month are
last in OPS (.408), on-base percentage (.169) and batting average (.113).

Looks like Canning season is over
Plus he's a free agent next season
The Mets just can't have nice things
Would Houston even give up Framber, being in great playoff position?
Such a shame with Canning. Senga, then Megill, then Kranick. Nothing is short term.
I would promote Jonah Tong. I am guessing Stearns wishes he’d already promoted Tong to AAA. Megill and Senga will be back, right? Add in Manaea, and I think a brief Tong trial would be worthwhile. AND… what better time than against low-hitting Pittsburgh this weekend?
Like Tong, why is Morabito not in AAA? He was hitting .210 in mid-May, now up to .304 with 30 steals. .350/.429/.475 in June. Come on! You want this guy ready if anyone in the Mets outfield gets hurt.
Tom
All of this lack of prospect moving really confuses me
Mr McClean,come on down!Mr Tong,come on down!
Mack, I only showed Morabito for June. In the second half of May, he was even hotter than his great June. SMH.
I am a Tong realist. I saw how Sproat flopped since AA last year. But he did not have Tong #s. Not close. Tong, last 58 innings, 5 earned runs! 22 hits! 96 Ks! Those numbers tell me he could probably hold his own against Pittsburgh NOW if he could control his nerves better than Jon Pintaro, who was so amped Wednesday, he really almost beaned Ronald Acuna and another guy. Pittsburgh is last in HRs, 26th in average, and just above last in runs. Do it. Just 3.2 runs per game. Think 1968 Mets.
McLean might get the nod. I’d also let him pinch hit in blow outs. Kingman power.
Word is...
Tidwell
Onix Vega is a .226 lifetime hitter at AA/AAA. No.
ALVAREZ, PLEASE GET IT TOGETHER! PRONTO!
McLean has had just one shaky start this year, about 5 weeks ago. Pittsburgh is like a very good hitting AAA team. He can do it.
If not Tong, give McLean a Mets start in Pittsburgh. His first AAA start this year after his promotion was very good, indicating he can step up. But, Tongs first AA start last year, 6 scoreless, no hits, no walks, 9 Ks. No nerves there.
I would really rather see Tong get tested in AAA than to bring him to the majors and have him get blown up. Having great numbers against players that are not good enough yet for the majors is not enough proof that he is ready.
