ONE CAN FIND SOLACE - IF ONE LOOKS HARD ENOUGH
I have written many times in past years that “METS” is an acronym for Multiple Extended Trauma Syndrome.
Long term injuries to Manaea, Montas, Chris Young, Senga, Winker, Blackburn (until recently) and other injuries fit that “METS” description.
You readers feel free to fill in the missing injury blanks.
Only Vientos’ boo boo seems like a good, old-fashioned shorter term injury. (AAA Joey Meneses has 25 doubles in 62 games and is hitting .280, just saying…that is a 65-double pace over 162 games. I guess 25 doubles isn’t enough to get that phone call).
Mark Vientos in a Tuesday rehab game at DH was (sigh) 0-4 with 2 Ks.
DH means “DO HIT”….PLEASE!
Baseball’s ups and downs are amazing…the Mets losing 5 straight, the Yankees losing 6 straight, and the Rockies (losers of an incredible 50 of their first 59) WINNING 4 straight. SMH.
When the Mets struggle at the big league level, as they have in this 5 game gosh awful, injury-filled losing streak, I simply look elsewhere, to the Mets minors, for solace and succor.
WHY?
With 7 Mets minors teams, there is always good news to be found.
Thru Wed., Binghamton, Brooklyn, St Lucie combined? 122-70. SWEET!
Tuesday night, the ghost of Christmas Future (Zach Thornton) faced the ghost of Christmas Past (Tyler Stuart). Zach came in sizzling at 6-1, 1.83.
Stuart caused many a shed tear from some MM writers when he was dealt last year for Jesse Winker (you know, the long-term injured guy with the long hair) - but Stuart is still in AA as he nears the age of 26.
Well, Thornton had one rough inning, allowing 3 runs, and Stuart allowed just one, so Binghamton lost.
But…good news.
Jett Williams (.306) had 3 hits, including his 18th double, and Nick Morabito (.288) had 2 hits, including his 19th double.
Both are getting MUCH closer to being MLB ready.
Get them to AAA ASAP. COME ON! They’re ready RIGHT NOW for AAA.
Lefty Jon Santucci meanwhile took the mound for the Cyclones Tuesday night. A shaky 2 run first, followed by 4 fine scoreless innings. He has been…I dunno…SUPERB over his last several starts. A rising prospect.
Teammate Chris Suero had 4 hits and now has 38 RBIs. Trailing 2-1 heading into the 8th, the Clobbering Cyclones added NINE RUNS in the last 2 innings. A 2-1 deficit morphed into a 10-2 win. 14 hits and 8 walks for the Cyclones’ offense.
AJ Ewing, 20, is a lefty hitting CF CLONE of righty Nick Morabito, except he walks more (45 times in 58 games). On base 3 times. 45 steals, above even Quick Nick’s theft output pace. Wow.
Trey Snyder, 19, walked 3 times for St Lucie, giving him FORTY WALKS. 21 steals, too. He could be lethal as a 20 year old in 2026.
Colin Houck has been hot: .340/.415/.574 in 12 June games. NOT a bust.
The FCL Mets aren’t hitting worth spit, just .199 in 28 games, but they won 2-0. My favorite hitter there is 19 year old C Julio Zayas at .284 - with just 10 Ks in 25 games, something I always notice. More contact = more hits.
On Tuesday, in the DSL, it is obvious that 19 year old Heriberto Rincon is off to a flying start. Tuesday, was 2-4 and a walk and his 10th steal in 11 games. Hitting .389 with a .476 OBP.
Great #s but 2 big levels below fellow 19 y/o Trey Snyder, just for perspective.
Quite a few hot hitters in Mets DSL, unlike the last few years, although it is still very early on in the DSL season. Will they stay hot?
Lastly, from the Tuesday DSL…
Bonus baby catcher Yovanny Rodriguez, back from injury, is 3 for 6 with a HR and 2 walks. He has already thrown out 3 would-be thieves. Very small sample…but I love GREAT small samples.
Great Tuesday, but…HOW DID THE MINORS BOYS DO WEDNESDAY?
Not all good news. Daiverson Gutierrez at catcher for St Lucie has made 15 ERRORS, including 3 on Wednesday, and a whopping 35 errors in 106 pro games.
But good news there was, nonetheless. Big, bad Nate Dohm threw 4 scoreless and fanned 8 for Brooklyn, and Brian Metoyer is pitching great in relief there, with a 1.06 ERA and a low WHIP. A scoreless frame, 2 Ks.
Jolly Jack Wenninger allowed just 1 run in 5 IP for Binghamton, with 8 Ks, and Anthony Nunez continues his jaw-dropping season in relief with another gem of an outing.
Those 2 lethal “B” teams won, combining for a typical 13 runs. Those 2 teams can SCORE!
The only other sour note?
Junky Funky Montas: 5 IP, 7 hits, 5 runs, 2 Ks.
FRANKLY…JUST…SO…FRIGGIN…READY, RIGHT?
Ready or not, here comes Frankie. Oh, my.
Well, I can always watch the minors for solace and succor.

Too bad none of our minor leaguers are major league ready.
Most of the Mets minor league teams have already clinch a playoff slot or will by this weekend
Teams like to keep their current Allstars through their respective all-star game
I expect a flurry of bump.ups after that, beginning with Wenninger, followed by Tonh, Williams, and Morabito, and then dudes like Thornton
I agree. Otherwise, the conveyor belt upwards would already be rolling.
Montas has been just horrible. Hate to think how he'll do in the bigs, but with that contract he'll be on the mound, good or bad
I think Tong and McLean are, and Williams and Morabito are likely close. Only one of the 4 is currently getting to play in AAA to strut their stuff.
I bet if they were in the White Sox system, all 4 would be in the majors now, taking their bumps and bruises as they adjust.
True. Where I have I heard that before? LOL
To bad we can't take a mulligan when facing a sure loss like last night. Also just our luck none of the four youngsters Vientos, Mauricio, Alvy or Baty have taken the reins this year. What an ugly streak were on and can we PLEASE upgrade at DH (Mack that was our last conversation) and send Alvy packing NOW! Senger at least gives us defense as even Torrens looks a little lost.
Gonna find out next week
That DH article that I already sent to Steve coming up Friday
Not in any way to compare Montasto Seaver, but Seaver in spring trainings sometimes did not do well, but didn’t care, because he was preparing forthe big league season. Maybe Montas finds a light switch too. Maybe he is in part just focused on getting his pitch counts up. He got 80 pitches in.
When I trained for my marathon, how I trained was not at race intensity. I saved that for the marathon. I ran a 3:25:27, by the way, and it took 90 seconds to get to cross the starting line, so it was 3:24, actually. That’s a pretty good ERA.
Gary, you can always focus on the minors. Why stress?
Chris Sale is a future HOF beast. We should have signed him and not Atlanta.
The Mets have to get past this whole Baby Met thing
Play Torrens and Senger for the rest of the season and send Alvarez to Syracusr
Play McNeil on second religiously
Look for rental on third or trade for established one soonest
Make all 4 Baby Mets available for adoption
Possible FA targets
3B Alex Bregman
C William Contreras
Watch for 3 Mets minor league catchers to move up in the next two weeks
With even adequate defense we take Tuesday's game and don't lament being shut out by Sale. Then it looks very different than a 5 game losing streak. It is tragic that the Mets will be the team that renews the spark in Atlanta this year.
Don't ya luv playin in dat town?
Paul, that Tuesday loss really hurt. Too many of those v. Atlantaoverthe pastseveral years.
I agree Mack. The babies need to stop spitting up.
