Tom Brennan: David Peterson is My Ace; NY Mets Updates; Bohan Adderley! Jett!

“SEE THAT GUY? DAVID PETERSON? HE IS MY ACE.”

Last year, as the Mets team was crashing and burning early in the year, with a 12-27 stretch, David Peterson returned and started firing quality start after quality start, post-hip surgery. 15-5 in 34 starts since he returned. So he’s lost just 5 of 34 starts. 5-2, 2.49 this season.

Soon after his 2024 season debut, I termed him “MY ACE”.

Have called him that more than a dozen times since.

Called him the next Cole Hamels. (Cole won 163 career games.)

I know we Mets fans have Kodai Senga. He’s great, sure.

Here’s the deal, though - Senga can be your ace, OK?

BUT DAVID PETERSON IS MY ACE.

A complete game shutout last night, 5-0. 106 pitches. 106 WOW’s.

MY ACE, FOLKS.  FIND YOUR OWN.

And two heavily criticized hitters, Nimmo and Soto, combined for 3 HRs last night, two by Brandon.  They have a fine 25 combined HRs in the season’s first 68 games.  I am expecting those two to combine for 65 HRs this year. Complain if you must; I won’t. I’ll just praise them. I suggest you do, too.

Oh, BTW, the Mets are in first place, by a lot.

44-24.

Shades of 1986.

METS GAME INFO - TUESDAY

Tuesday?

The Mets faced Mighty Mac(K) Gore, the Nats stud and MLB leader in Ks.

114 Ks in 81 IP.  Not shabby.

The Metsies trailed him 4-2, but no one throws complete games anymore, so the tough Mets rallied vs. the Nats pen.

Sizzling Soto socked # 12 and added a double, Pounding Pete narrowly and barely missed a HR (thanks again, Citi Field) to drive in Soto and tie it up at 4-4. Without those 2 sluggers and Lindor, would they even be a .500 team?

Jeff McNeil - game winning single (2 hits, he’s HOT, at .266) - a 5-4 win.

Reed Garrett got it done. Again. 0.95 ERA.

Canning? 4 runs.

Manaea in rehab had a strong 2.2 Brooklyn innings…

Uh oh for Canning as a starter?

NYM after Tuesday’s win was 5 ahead of Philly, and 14.5 ahead of Atlantis, which has sunk into the briny deep, where Marlins normally swim.

Tong was, as always, terrific. 5.1 IP. 1 run, 8 Ks.  MLB ready?  I say yes.

Jon Santucci again was superb: 4.2 IP, 2 hits, 4 Ks, got the Cyclones W.

Matt Allan (remember him?) tossed a hitless 9th in a non-save situation.

Binghamton and Brooklyn combined? 79-36. Wow.

Tidwell was OK, but neither “terrific” nor “superb”.

ST LUCIE ERUPTS!

They gave up 10 runs on 15 hits, so they lost badly, right?

Wrong, they won 16-10.

16 hits, 11 walks.

But 10 LOB. Next time, score 20, will ya?

Trace Willhoite had 4 hits.

They are 2nd in league OBP ay .354, just 3 points behind the top team.

JETT BLASTS TWO!

Jett Williams cranked out his 5th and 6th HR, and walked. The first 2 HR game of his career.

Up to .288. 17 steals (no, not last night, this season).

Zach Thornton was again great into the 6th. He left mid-inning, and his relief allowed 2 inherited runners to score, so he allowed a rare 3 earned runs in a 4-2 loss. He fanned six.

BOHAN ADDERLEY ERUPTS

In yesterday’s FCL game, Adderley had 3 singles, 2 steals…and a grand slam.

Just 18 years old throughout the 2025 season.  Nice game, young fella!

Tong

Sadly, he will have to play AAA in 2026 and wait his turn

Allan

Moving to pen

Adderley

18 is old for DSL

Hopefully he can put his slow start behind him now

Give him 60 more at bats and move him stateside

Adderley is already in FCL. So his game yesterday is encouraging andI think he is 10 for his last 24, and racking up steals.

I think Tong is the next Gooden. Unless proven otherwise. Striking out the world. In his last several games, 33 innings, hitters are “hitting” .100. He will bust his way right into the rotation for 2025.

2026, I meant…are we already in 2025?

Tom, even though everyone would consider Senga our ace because he has the best stuff and the highest potential. But I have to say Peterson has been our best pitcher overall since he came back from surgery.

Mack, I saw your 5-man rotation and I have to say that Manaea would actually be our 5th starter this year. What a wonderful problem to have.

As long as Senga is around, we would always need a 6th starter. So that's were Scott pencils in.

2026:
Senga
Peterson
Manaea
Holmes
McClean
Scott

This is your "Oh"

Yes, Tong is special but success and contracts are success and contracts

Especially on a team with the best record in baseball

Send Tong to Syracuse today

Let him finish there and consider adding him for the playoffs as a pen pitcher

Then orchestrate a trade in the off season of one of your current rotation pitchers for a producing CF, 1B or DH

Looking at the projected pitchers for 2026. If things turn correctly the likes of Tidwell, Scott, Sprout are not mentioned but could be viable pitchers. Oh what might be.

Well, if you have a guy fan 60 in his last 33 innings with 11 hits allowed, do you automatically throw out a possible comp to Gooden? Sounds Goodenesque to me.

By the way on the Beach Boys theme lets "Do it Again" and "Wouldnt it be Nice" to get a WS trophy but as we all have been here before "God Only Knows"

Senga pulled for hamstring

I like aces who aren’t fragile. David Peterson comes to mind.
