iN FOCUS: Morning Thoughts - Mets sub-OPS - Daily Whiff Leaders - Larry Doby, Promotions, Team Bullpen ERA

Morning Thoughts

On last night's Mets game, not much to highlight here. The pitching staff did their job. They gave up only three runs over nine innings. That's supposed to be good enough for a team that led the league in Power Ratings last week.

Hat's off to Brett Baty for keeping that whole Baby Mets dream alive, but two hits out of the last six hitters in the lineup isn't going to win you many ballgames.

We move on to Montas Tuesday. Maybe the Mets should have pitched him last night and we could have had The Bangles sing their old hit when the team hit the field.

We may have a first baseman getting his mojo on… AA-Binghamton’s Ryan Clifford went 2-3 yesterday, that included a triple and two more at-bats that results in walks. He’s up to 12-HR in 227-AB, pacing well ahead of his 2024 totals of 19-HR in 435-AB. His batting average is at a two-year high and his OPS has risen to .823. Still too many strikeouts but what power hitter doesn’t suffer from this? Look, we really don’t know where Pete Alonso is going to play next season. I followed Clifford through school and the scouts actually had him with more home run potential than Pete did when he was playing college ball. Why not bump him up to AAA-Syracuse and give him the rest of this season to try to hit that crazy ball and amped up strike zone in that league? Another can’t hurt move.

Two promotions from AA-Binghamton to AAA-Syracuse:

    RHRP Alex Carrillo – 28/years old –

               2025/AA: 15-APPS, 2-1, 4.29, 1.19, 19.1-IP, 30-K, only 8-BB

    RHRP Luis Moreno – 26/years old -

              2025/AA:  20-APPS, 2-ST, 5-1, 4.45, 1.28, 30.1-1P, 27-K, 14-BB

I see both of these as simple roster fills created when Syracuse relievers were sent to New York.

More moves...

Mets optioned IF Luisangel Acuña and RP Tyler Zuber to AAA-Syracuse

They also moved OF Jose Siri to the dreaded 60-day IL. (Tyrese Halliburton has a better chance of coming off this first)

Promoted to the Mets was OF Travis Jankowski

And they signed to a major league contract LHRP Dicky Lovelady (I'll leave this name alone)

Oh yeah... I noticed that the Mets had placed Matt Allan back on the IL. I have no idea why or when.

And lastly...

Like so many others, I thought the Mets had the whole third baseman thing settled. All they had to decide was what one of two prospects were going to man the hot corner going forward. Events so far this season make me keep hoping Mr. Stearns makes a run at Alex Bregman in the off-season (though his being on the 10-day right now for a quad issue dosn't make me happy either.

Then Thomas Nestico prints this last night:

Jacob Reimer (NYM) gets the well-deserved promotion to AA!

Reimer holds an elite 158 wRC+ in Hi-A where he is exhibiting elite swing decisions and a big improvement in power. He has all the tools to develop into a dynamic bat for the Mets!

Does Reimer have a chance to be the next great thing since The Captain? Excuse me if I'm not going to be fooled three times at this position.

Ernest Dove learned to be a prospect hugger from me. Steve Cohen changed that when he came on the scene, first signing Francisco Lindor and then Juan Soto. I want two things this off season... lock up our star first baseman and end the search for the right person on third by signing Bregman for 5-6 years. Reimer is basically just a one position player and doesn't offer the versatility to play two or three infield positions at a major league level. Add him to the growing list of Mets now available for a trade for an outfielder or relief pitcher.

Michael Baron                                   @michaelgbaron

The Mets have a sub-.660 OPS from 4 positions in 2025.

"I knew it was segregated times, but I had never seen anything like that in athletics. I was embarrassed. It was tough."

Larry Doby on joining the Indians.

Bill White later noted that Larry Doby had to go to the Chicago White Sox clubhouse to get a first baseman’s glove for his first MLB warm up, since none of his Cleveland teammates offered him one. 1947

Reimer has been cold at the plate in June. Hopefully, he will be hot in Binghamton,

Mets hitters below the top 4 or 5 get a C- or D, in the aggregate. What if they did not sign Soto? The Mets offensive engine might have seized.

Travis and Dicky, riding to the rescue.

Get Tong to AAA when it is time for his next start.

VERY HAPPY to see Brian Metoyer get promoted. He always used to have control issues. Elbow-related? Then a second TJS, and he returns with much improved control based on LOW 8 walks in his last 19 IP. 0.88 WHIP. It would be cool to see probably the last 40th rounder ever to make the big leagues. He has allowed just 56 hits in 103 career innings (.161 BAA), so why not?

Bullpen ERA beginning to climb. Too much work lately for them as starters are not making it thru 5 innings
