Ruben Tejada went 4-4 and drove in Emmanuel Garcia in the eighth to give the Binghamton Mets an insurance run in their 5-3 win over the Reading Phillies Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. The win secured the B-Mets second consecutive series win. It is the first time that Binghamton has won back-to-back series.
Tejada has recorded at least three hits in four of his last six games and Garcia struck for his ninth three-hit game of the season to break out of a slump. Roy Merritt saved his first game since June 10, working the final 1.1 innings scoreless and hitless.
Domonic Brown hit a solo home run in the first inning off B-Mets starter Mike Antonini to put the Phillies in front 1-0.
Binghamton (44-68) scored one run in the second off Reading (62-51) starter Mike Cisco. Mark Kiger started the threat with a two-out single and then stole second base. Garcia then hit an RBI single to bring in Kiger and knot the game at one.
Tejada recorded his second hit of the game to lead off the third inning and later scored on a Jose Coronado RBI double, putting the B-Mets in front 2-1.
The rains hit in the top of the fourth with two outs, right after Jake Ruckle came into relieve Antonini, who allowed two hits in the frame. After a 33-minute delay, Ruckle threw one pitch to finish off a strikeout to end the inning.
Cisco, who lost his second game, ran into trouble again in the fifth. Tejada single for the third time in the game and Coronado reached on a bunt single. Josh Thole then reached on a throwing error by Kevin Mahar, who hit Coronado in the back with his throw to second after a ground ball.
Lucas Duda then grounded into a run-scoring fielder’s choice to shortstop, scoring Tejada and moving Coronado to third. D.J. Wabick’s single plated Coronado, extending the lead to 4-1. It also chased Cisco from the game in favor of Mike Zagurski, who got out of the inning without any further damage.
Brown hit his second solo home run of the game in the seventh inning off Ruckle to pull the Phillies within two, 4-2. In the eighth, Steve Susdorf doubled off reliever Emary Frederick and then Ozzie Chavez singled to drive in Susdorf cutting the lead to 4-3. Merritt relieved Frederick and induced a flyout from pinch-hitter Brian Stavisky to end the frame.
