Savannah 3, Asheville 1

The Sand Gnats snapped their three-game losing streak with a, 3-1, win in a rain-shortened game at Grayson Stadium Sunday afternoon. Savannah was on the field ready to play the top of the sixth when the umpires delayed the game due to heavy rains. The win also helps move Savannah to within 3.5 games of first-place Asheville, who was rained out in Rome earlier in the day.

A three-run third proved to be the difference maker for the Gnats in their unorthodox with on Sunday. Jose Jimenez singled to start the inning and moved to third on a double by Luis Alen. With no one out, Raul Reyes cleared the bases with a double and the Gnats led, 2-0. Reyes would come around three batters later on a Jordan Abruzzo groundout that was misplayed by Hot Rods first baseman John Mollicone.

The three-run advantage was enough for Robert Carson (8-7), who pitched five innings and allowed one Hot Rods run on six hits. The 20-year-old All Star bounced back to form in his outing on Sunday afternoon and lowered his season ERA to 2.84.

Unfortunately for Sean Ratliff, the rain also brought an abrupt end to his 17-game hitting streak. Ratliff was 0-for-3 in Sunday’s game but would have had at least one more at bat had a full nine-inning game been completed as he made the final out of the fifth inning.

Joe Cruz (4-6) worked 4.2 innings for the Hot Rods and suffers the loss. The righty allowed all three runs (two earned) on four hits.

Monday is a Military Monday at Grayson Stadium with Family Four Packs available for $30. It’s also a half-priced group night and a Guaranteed Win Night. If Savannah doesn’t come away with a win, everyone will receive a free G/A ticket to the next Monday home game.
