LAST GAME: As it should be, good pitching ended a nine-game

losing skid Saturday night versus New Britain. Three pitchers

combined to hold the Rock Cats to one run on nine hits in the

B-Mets 3-1 victory. Chris Schwinden made his Double-A debut

and responded with a quality start. The righty fired six innings

and allowed just a run on six hits with five strikeouts for his

first win. He was backed by a pair of solo homers off New

Britain starter Santos Arias. Marshall Hubbard lifted off in the

second and Kirk Nieuwenhuis touched them all in the third to

spot Binghamton a 2-0 lead. Erik Lis provided the only offense

for New Britain with a fourth-inning home run off Schwinden.

Manual Alvarez also made his debut with a scoreless innings,

despite allowing a leadoff double. Josh Stinson recorded his

first save in three chances with two, shutout innings in the

eighth and the ninth. The win brought a season-worst, ninegame

losing streak to an end.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Scott Shaw is due to

make his team-leading ninth start this afternoon. For the

second straight start, he gave up seven earned runs over 4.1

innings in a loss May 16 at Trenton. Shaw is 4-2 with an 8.76

ERA over 38 innings. He has allowed 10 homers in 2010, tops

in the Eastern League. He led St. Lucie (High-A) last season in

numerous categories, including starts (26), innings (149.2),

wins (8) and strikeouts (118). The righty was drafted by the

Mets in the 13th round of the June 2008 draft out of the

University of Illinois.

RHP Carlos Gutierrez goes for the Rock Cats for the ninth time

this year. He has lost back-to-back starts despite pitching well.

His last start was May 18 at Portland, where he offered up six

innings and allowed just two runs, one earned, on four hits,

but was hung with the loss. Gutierrez is 0-2 with a 1.88 ERA in

his last four starts and is 0-3 with a 3.98 ERA in 43 innings

overall. The hard-throwing righty is considered the ninth-best

prospect in the Twins farm system by Baseball America and

was drafted by Minnesota in the first round (27th overall) of

the June 2008 draft out of the University of Miami.

THE DROUGHT IS OVER The B-Mets nine-game losing streak

came to an abrupt stop last night with the team’s 3-1 victory

over New Britain. It was the longest such streak since the

conclusion of the 2004 season when Binghamton lost the last

nine games of the regular season. The Rock Cats had a losing

streak of 10 games earlier this season.

REGARDS TO RAMIREZ: Reliever Edgar Ramirez has slid under

the radar with a terrific month of May. After a mediocre April in

which he was 1-0 with a 4.61 ERA, he has allowed just two

earned runs in 15 innings (1.20 ERA) in seven outings in May
