AA Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins
RHP Chris Schwinden (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Santos Arias (0-5, 4.66)
Game #41• Saturday, May 22, 2010
New Britain Stadium • New Britain, CT • 6:35 p.m.
LAST GAME: Binghamton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, only
to watch New Britain score the next 13 runs en route to a 14-
2 rout of the B-Mets at New Britain Stadium Friday night in
front of a capacity crowd. Mike Nickeas drew a bases-loaded
walk off Rock Cats starter David Bromberg in the first inning.
From there, Bromberg became stingy. The righty recovered to
toss 6.2 innings of two-run ball, tying a season-high with nine
strikeouts for his second win. The other run permitted by the
righty was a Nick Evans’ leadoff homer in the sixth, his seventh
of the season. Evans record three of Binghamton’s seven
hits. Starter Brad Holt was roughed up for seven runs over 2.2
innings to lose his fourth start. Roy Merritt was harassed as
well to the tune of six runs over 1.1 innings of relief. Alan de
San Miguel who entered the contest with one hit in 12 at-bats,
went 4-5 with a pair of doubles and four RBI.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Chris Schwinden will
attempt to infuse new life into the B-Mets tonight in his first
career Double-A start. He opened the season with St. Lucie
(High-A) and impressed with a 3-0 mark and a 1.83 ERA in
seven appearances, two of which were starts. In 34.1 innings,
he walked just five and struck out 23. The righty spent most of
2009 with Savannah (Low-A) where he was 9-6 with a 3.28
ERA over 115.1 innings. Schwinden was the Mets’ 22nd
round selection in the June 2008 draft out of Fresno Pacific
University.
RHP Santos Arias will make a spot start of the Rock Cats tonight.
He has strung together four straight scoreless outings
of relief dating back to May 10, spanning 3.2 innings. On the
year, Arias is 0-5 with a 4.66 ERA. He is in his first full season
of relief. The Dominican-born righty spent opened last year in
Fort Myers (High-A) bullpen, but finished the season in the
rotation and was 2-2 with a 1.92 ERA in nine starts (51.2 IP)
to wrap up the year. Minnesota signed the righty out of La
Romana, DR February 9, 2005.
IT ENDS TONIGHT? After a 19-12 start, the B-Mets are reeling,
having lost nine in a row following an 14-2 loss at the hands
of the New Britain Rock Cats last night. It is the longest losing
streak since Binghamton lost nine in a row to end the 2004
season August 25-September 3. 2004 was the last year the BMets
made the postseason.
STARTING PITCHING WOES: The B-Mets losing ways are partly
due to a lack of reliable starting pitching. The starters have
given up four runs or more in each of the last five games.
During the team’s current drought, the starters are 0-7 with
an 8.79 ERA in 42 innings (41 ER). Binghamton has gotten
only one quality start in its last 10 games
