Draft Notes 5-18-12 – Justin Self, TAMU vs. Okla St, Pat Light

Louisville (37-17)got off to a tough start Thursday night against Pittsburgh (27.25), what with SP Justin Amlung giving up five runs in the first three innings. Things settled down and, with thelep of Derek Self on the mound, and C Kyle Gibson’s bat, they won 6-5 in the opening game of the  Big East finals.

I caught up with Self (2.0-IP, 1-H, 0-R, 3.07) after the game who told how the team came back:

Derek Austin Self -

“Yeah, it was a tough start, but at the same time the reason why Justin is our number one guy he kept fighting the whole time, never giving up and he always is out there giving it his all. When we were down three for some time, we just kept fighting as a team and our bullpen was lights out. Once we got it tied 5-5 it was a war then. Whoever scored the first run was going to win. We knew as a team that we weren’t giving up that run and we did a great job of that. Me coming into the 11th, I went 3 up 3 down and we had a lot of momentum. i could really see the energy in all of us  that carried over and we put together a nice hit by Sturgon and that started it all. With a huge at bat by Ijames getting a walk to bring Sturgon in to make it 6-5. Going out to the bottom of the 12th I just really worked the hitters well keeping the ball don and hitting corners. Ijames comes up with a huge catch against the fence that was foul to give us 2 outs and then I got the next hitter out. The main thing that we did as a team tonight was to NEVER give up and that’s what we did. When our back was against the wall, we really turned it up and that is a special feeling when you know your team can do that.”

Game of the night had to be TAMU vs. Oklahoma State. Two first rounders going head to head. It was so even neither got the win… Michael Wacha – 6.2-IP, 1-ER, 6-H, 4-K, 0-BB… Andrew Heaney – 8.1-IP, 6-H, 2-ER, 12-K, 2-BB… who won? Who cares.

One of this year’s top pitcher comes out of Mommouth (33-22). It’s junior RHP Pat Light, who 5-hit Fairleigh Dickinson, 7-1. I talked to Pat after the game who was quite excited:

Felt good today it’s big to get that first win in the conference tournament. Gives our team a lot of confidence going into the second game tomorrow and we will go from there. It was a solid season for me and hopefully it is not over anytime soon, I've had an awesome time with these guys and I am not ready for it to end yet. The draft is something that is obviously on my mind but definitely in the back of my mind at this point. I am excited for it but at this point in the season with conference tournament and trying to get back to regionals there really is no time to think about it. I’ll worry about the draft when the time comes, for now I'm taking it day by day and trying to finish off a successful season not only for me but for my team.
