Indians shutdown Bisons offense, 4-1

The Bisons offense couldn't get much going against Indians pitcher Rick Vandenhurk.
Buffalo fell to Indianapolis 4-1 on Sunday afternoon on a scorching hot day at Coca-Cola Field. The loss snaps the Herd's four game win streak.

Vandenhurk didn't give the Bisons much to hit in his five innings of work, allowing one run on two hits striking out three.
"I gotta give credit to the pitcher for pitching a good game," Manager Wally Backman said. "We just couldn't hit cause this guy was throwing all the right stuff."

The Herd's lone run came in the first, when Corey Wimberly led off bottom of the first with a single. Wimberly stole second following Fred Lewis striking out.

After a groundout by Vinny Rottino, Wimberly moved to third. With Val Pascucci up at the plate, the speedy centerfielder had a delayed straight steal to home.

"I basically told Corey (Wimberly) if you think you can steal home go for it, " Backman added. "It was a success due to the position of the third baseman."

It is the first time a Bison has stole home plate since Chris Clapinski on May 16, 2004 at Columbus.

The last time a Bisons at home swiped home plate was Damian Jackson on April 4, 1997.

"I told Wally if the pitcher lobs the ball back, I'm going home," Wimberly said. "I caught them sleeping so I went for it."

Jack Egbert, who started in place of Jeremy Hefner who was called up to the Mets, tossing an efficient two innings giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits.

In relief of Egbert, Chuck James threw three innings, no runs on one hit.

BISONS NOTES: Manager Wally Backman was ejected in the third inning arguing a caught stealing call by the third base umpire...Bisons activated Jeff Stevens and Edgar Ramirez to the club's roster...Chris Schwinden was recalled by the Mets...Michael Fischer has been transferred to Double-A Binghamton Mets.
