New York was looking to bounce back from Thursday night’s
loss in extras by sending Jerry Koosman to the hill. He came through with 7
solid innings but left trailing 3-1. Fortunes changed for the Mets in a three-run
8th highlighted by Art Shamsky’s double and reserve catcher J.C.
Martin’s 2 run homer off Red fireman Clay Carroll, who took the loss.
The Mets gained a game on the division-leading Cubs. They
lost to Claude Osteen and the Dodgers 4-2 earlier in the day at Chicago. The 2nd
place Mets were now 5 back of the Northsiders.
