July 27th
The good news is the Cubs lost. Unfortunately so did the
Mets. Chicago fell to visiting Los Angeles and Don Drysdale 6-2. New York
couldn’t take advantage though-getting beat 6-3 in front of a packed house
(55,391) of Shea faithful on the final Sunday of July.
The Reds jumped on starter Don Cardwell with a three-run 1st
capped off by Tony Perez’s 2 run shot. A fielding miscue and Alex Johnson’s double
added two more in the 4th sending Cardwell to the showers. The Mets trimmed the Red lead to 5-2 in the 6th
following Cleon Jones’ run-scoring single and a Tommie Agee sac-fly. Ron
Swoboda then came to the plate with runners on the corners but went down on strikes.
Reds starter, southpaw Gerry Arrigo scattered 7 hits over 7
and Wayne Granger went 1 2/3 for his 13th save.

I loved Don Cardwell...tough pitcher. Good memory.
