Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field, the Mets offense broke
out for 4 runs in the 5th, 5 runs in the 7th and 2 in the
8th. The Mets topple the Phillies 11-2. Zach Wheeler started for the Mets and his maturation
continues. While not having his best stuff, Wheeler pitched out of jams and
went 6 2/3 innings in holding the Phils at bay.
The Phils took a 1-0 lead in the 5th on an RBI double by Ryan
Howard. After that…it was pretty much all
Mets. In the 5th Juan Lagares
scored on a wild pitch and then Daniel Murphy followed with a 3 run homer (8)
to make it 4-1. The Phils make it 4-2 on
a pinch hit solo homer by Jimmy Rollins his 15th and 2nd
in two days. In the 7th the
Mets pulled away scoring 5 more times on RBI hits by Lucas Duda, Travis d’Arnaud,
Ruben Tejada and Jeurrys Familia. The last two runs came in the 8th
on a 2 run homer by Duda, his 19th on the year. The Mets exploded
for 15 hits on the day. Murphy, Lagares and Tejada led the way with 3 hits
apiece. Wheeler allowed 7 hits while
walking 2 and striking out 4 getting the win, he’s now 6-8. Kyle Kendrick gave
up 4 runs in 6 innings pitched and takes the loss. Dana Eveland, Jeurys Familia
and Carlos Torres finished up out of the pen. The Mets improve to 52-56 on the year
and are now 27-24 at home and are now 14-7 in their last 21 games. The Mets are off on Thursday. Friday night
the Giants come to town for a three game weekend set. Friday night Jon Niese
(5-6 3.23) goes for the Mets. Ryan
Vogelsong (5-8 3.94) goes for San Fran.
