Josh Edgin lost his footing trying to field a comebacker by Seth Smith with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, the Padres take two of three from the Mets Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win. The Mets had to fight uphill all day long. Zach Wheeler started for the Mets. He pitched well but got the no-decision. The only run he gave up came in the 4th inning when Yasmani Grandal hit a solo homer (9). It was his 2nd homer in 2 games. Meanwhile, Padre starter Odrisamer Despaigne was no hitting the Mets. The rookie held the Mets hitless for 7 2/3. Daniel Murphy broke the spell with a line double to left center. Then David Wright followed with a RBI single and the game was tied at 1. Then in the bottom of the ninth, fielding misplays by Vic Black and then Edgin led the Smith’s infield single to score Cameron Maybin with the game winner in the bottom of the 9th. Wheeler looked strong for the third straight outting going 6 innings allowing 8 hits the 1 run (earned) walking 1 and striking out 7. Edgin takes the loss falling to 1-1. Joaquin Benoit gets the win he improves to 4-2. The Mets have now lost two straight. They stand at 46-52 on the year and 21-29 on the road. Next up the road trip continues as the Mets fly Seattle to take on the Mariners. Monday night Jon Niese (5-4 2.96) comes off the DL and makes his first start of the 2nd half. Roenis Elias (7-8 4.54) goes for Seattle.
