Brevard County Walk Off Against St. Lucie
Jose Sermo blasted a walkoff home run with one out in the ninth to lift the Brevard County Manatees to a 4-3 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Friday at Space Coast Stadium.
The crushing homer came one inning after the Mets erased a 3-0 deficit and tied the game in the eighth.
The Manatees scored their first three runs all with two outs. Alfredo Rodriguez tagged a pitch from starter Kevin McGowan in the fourth into left field that plated Cameron Garfield.
McGowan held the Manatees in check until he walked the first two batters of the seventh. Julian Hilario came in and got two outs, but Michael Reed singled home both runners to put the Manatees up 3-0.
That looked to be enough for Brevard County. However, the Mets rallied with two outs in the eighth. MLB rehabber Taylor Teagarden, Jared King and Cam Maron hit back-to-back-to-back singles off of Scott Leiser to put the Mets on the board.
Mark Williams came in and walked Phil Evans to load the bases. Williams then plunked Aderlin Rodriguez to force in a run and he walked Jeff McNeil to bring in Maron and tie the game 3-3.
The rally ended when Eudy Pina flied out to center on a 1-0 pitch.
Williams struck out two in a perfect ninth to bring the Manatees to the plate in the bottom of the inning with a chance to win it.
T.J. Chism got Brandon Macias to fly out to center to start the frame, but Sermo smacked a pitch from the lefty over the left-center wall into the berm to win the game for the Manatees. It was Sermo’s second homer of the season.
McGowan pitched six innings and gave up four hits and three runs in six innings. He walked five and struck out one.
Manatees starter Hobbs Johnson also received a no decision. He shut out the Mets over 6 2/3 innings and struck out six. - team press release
