Saturday night in Citi Field Juan Lagares and Wilmer Flores
drove in 2 runs apiece to support Jon Niese, the Mets beat the Cubs 7-3. The Mets scored 7 runs on the night on only 4
hits. They scored three times in the bottom of the 2nd on a RBI
ground-rule double by Lagares and a two run single by Flores. The Cubs got a run back in the 5th
on a solo homer by Wellington Castillo (9) to make it 3-1. In the 6th
the Mets scored 4 times, Matt den Dekker walked with the bases loaded to make
it 4-1. Lagares hit a sac-fly to center but the ball was booted by Arismendy
Alcantara allowing a pair of runs to score making it 6-1. den Dekker scored on a fielder’s choice by
Niese to cap the Met scoring. In the top
of the 7th the Cubs scored 2 runs on 5 consecutive hits off Niese.
Vic Black came in with the bases loaded and no out and got out of the jam with
no more runs scoring. Jeurrys Familia pitched a scoreless 8th and
Buddy Carlyle pitched the ninth to nail it down . Niese went 6 innings allowing
7 hits 3 runs (all earned) walking 2 and striking out 6 getting the win
improving to 7-8. Dan Straily takes the
loss for the Cubs falling to 1-4. The Mets have now won 2 straight improving to
59-65 on the season and are now 30-30 at Citi Field. Sunday afternoon is game
three of the four game set. Rafael Montero (0-3 6.12) goes for the Mets, Jake
Arrieta (6-4 2.77) goes for Chicago.
