Tuesday night in Washington, Zach Wheeler battled through
some control issues and the Mets came through with some timely hitting as they
beat the Nationals 6-1. The Mets, as they have all year long got off to a fast
lead with RBI singles by David Wright in
the first and Wheeler in the 2nd making it 2-0 early on. In the Bottom of the second Wheeler allowed 3 walks and a single but the only run
to score came in on a wild pitch to Andy LaRoche. The Mets pulled away in the 7th
scoring 3 times. Daniel Murphy hit a 2 run single. Lucas Duda dropped a
perfectly placed RBI single in left center to make it 5-1. In the 8th Kirk Nieuwenhuis in his
first at bat since his recall hit an RBI single off the shoulder of Nats
reliever Blake Treinen and it was 6-1. Wheeler lasted 6 2/3 allowing 7 hits the
1 run (earned) he walked 4 and struck out 5. He gets the win improving to 7-8.
He lowers his ERA to 3.48. Josh Edgin (1/3
of an inning) and Jeurrys Familia (1 inning) made scoreless appearances for the
Mets. Dana Eveland pitched a scoreless 9th.
Gio Gonzales takes the loss. He falls to 6-8.
Offensively for the Mets Murphy led the way again going 3 for 4 with the 2 RBI. He now paces the NL in hits
with 137 and is now batting an even .300. The Mets are now 54-59. They stand
26-32 on the road. Wednesday night is
game two of the series. Jon Niese (5-7
3.24) goes for the Mets. Doug
Fister (10-3 2.68) goes for Washington.

Ballsy, well-played game and a huge win.
Atlanta is playing very bad right now... I think 7 straight loses... and the Mets are just four loses away from them and 2 away from Miami.
There are too many teams winning in the Wild Card race...
let's see if the Mets could sweep the Nats and then possibly make a run to the division title
Just nice to see Wheeler battles. Would rather efficient GBs all night, but they really needed him to go at least six on an off night and he gave then 62/3 one run. Can't ask more from a pitcher who is struggling with command.
