LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in a 5-1 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels, on Wednesday at The Diamond. Greg Peavey went 6.2 shutout innings, allowed just four hits and struck out four. Brian Burgamy and Dustin Lawley each hit home runs for Binghamton. Each player also scored twice. The B-Mets are 5-0 against Richmond this season. They dropped their magic number to clinch a playoff spot to 14.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Matt Bowman takes the hill for the 17th time this season and the second time against Richmond. The Chevy Chase, Maryland native is coming off a win in his last outing. He gave up just one run and struck out six batters in seven innings against Bowie on Thursday, July 31. Binghamton won the game 9-4. Bowman was dominant in his only other appearance against the Flying Squirrels in 2014. He threw six shutout innings and gave up just three hits in a 5-1 B-Met victory on June 19. The 23-year-old was taken by the Mets in the 13th round of the 2012 draft out of Princeton University.
RICHMOND STARTER: LHP Ty Blach toes the rubber for the 21st time this season and the second against Binghamton. The southpaw has been tagged with the loss in each of his last two outings. That includes last Friday, August 1 at Altoona. The Denver, Colorado native surrendered six runs on ten hits in five innings. Richmond lost the game 7-3. Blach was also saddled with the loss in his only other matchup with the B-Mets. He gave up just one run in five innings, but the Flying Squirrels fell 5-1 on June 17. Blach ranks seventh in the league among qualifiers with a 3.46 ERA. The Eastern League mid-season All-Star was taken by San Francisco in the fifth round of the 2012 draft out of Creighton University.
FIRST THINGS FIRST: Last night’s performance by Greg Peavey continued a streak of four straight fantastic performances by Binghamton starting pitchers. The unit has allowed one earned run in the last 26.2 innings. The stretch includes 26 strikeouts and just three walks. They have not surrendered a home run in the last four games. Overall, B-Met starters have a 3.90 ERA on the season.
WHACK!: Brian Burgamy and Darrell Ceciliani are both riding season-long hitting streaks. Ceciliani managed a first inning single of Wednesday to extend his stretch to eight games. It’s the second time he’s reached that mark this season. Burgamy is riding the a ten game hitting streak. He’s the ninth Binghamton player to have a hitting streak of at least ten games this season. The pair is a combined 27-for-71 (.380) during their respective streaks.
WALK THIS WAY: Binghamton batters walked nine times in Wednesday’s game. It’s the fifth time in the last six outings that the team has earned at least four base-on-balls in a contest. They’ve earned a free pass 16 times through the first two games of this series. The team is second in the league in walks on the year with 410.
BACK, BACK, BACK: The B-Mets lead the league with 109 home runs this season. That’s eight more than any other team. Only four squads have more than 90 long balls in 2014.
KEEP ON, KEEPING ON: Binghamton can sweep a series for the sixth time on Thursday and the second time against Richmond. The team is 5-0 against the Flying Squirrels in 2014. The team is 22 games above .500 for the first time this year. They have trimmed their magic number to clinch a playoff game down to 14.
