The Clearwater Threshers cruised to a 5-1 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Sunday afternoon at Bright House Field.
Threshers starter Colin Kleven settled down after a rocky first inning to pitch six shut out innings.
As a team, the Mets only had five singles. Six of the nine hitters in the order were held hitless.
The Threshers took a 2-0 lead in the second when Corey Bass’s infield single scored Brian Pointer with two outs. Pointer stole third earlier in the inning. Luis Cessa then threw a wild pitch that allowed Harold Martinez to score.
The Threshers got back-to-back home runs from Art Charles and Bass off of Cessa to start the fifth inning. Roman Quinn scored later in the fifth to make it 5-0.
The Mets were stifled at the plate for most of the afternoon. They had a great opportunity to jump on Kleven early but could not break through. Kleven walked to batters and gave up a hit to Jared King to load the bases with one out in the first. However, Phil Evans grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Through the first 21 innings of the series, the Mets bounced into seven double plays.
The Mets finally broke through in the eighth inning. Ulises Joaquin walked two batters with two outs and King drove in Maikis De La Cruz with a single. King was thrown out to end the inning trying to extend his single into a double.
King went 2 for 4. He now has four consecutive two-hit games.
De La Cruz also had two hits for the Mets. Jeff McNeil had the other.
Cessa took the loss. He gave up seven hits and five runs in six innings. He walked one and struck out seven.
Kleven improved to 5-8 with the win. = team press release
