Houston’s Tom Griffin tossed his third shutout of the 1969
Metropolitans as the Astros beat New York 3-0. Jim McAndrew started and fell to
3-5 for the visiting Mets. Astro 1B Curt Blefary did most of the damage, going 2-2, driving
in a pair with a single.
Griffin escaped a bases loaded jam in the 2nd by
striking out McAndrew, ending the only Met scoring threat of the night.
Chicago had the night off but the surging 1968
pennant-winning Cardinals caught up to New York with a 4-2 victory over Los
Angeles. Both New York (62-49) and St. Louis (64-51) are now 8 games off the
pace in the East.
