August 4th
New York came up short in its first visit to Cincinnati
since May. Jerry Koosman was the hard-luck loser in this one as the Reds’
scratched-out a 1-0 win. The Met southpaw scattered five hits over seven
innings but the Reds Jim Maloney out dueled him on the hill tossing a 2-hit
shutout over 8 2/3. Wayne Granger retired Ed Kranepool with one on to record
his 15th save.
A 3rd inning sac fly by Alex Johnson accounted
for the game’s lone run. The Mets fell to 7.5 games back of the Cubs who rolled
to a 9-3 victory behind Ferguson Jenkins in the Astrodome.
